When To Get Help

Can anxiety cause acid reflux symptoms?

If youâre struggling with stress and donât know how to cope, you may want to seek help from a specialist. Your primary care doctor can be a good starting point. They can help you figure out if the signs and symptoms youâre experiencing are from a medical issue or an anxiety disorder.

They can also refer you to a mental health expert and provide you with additional resources and tools.

Some of the signs itâs time to get help:

  • Your work or school performance is suffering
  • Youâre using alcohol, drugs, or tobacco to deal with your stress
  • Your eating or sleeping habits change significantly
  • Youâre behaving in ways that are dangerous to yourself, including self-mutilation
  • You have irrational fears and anxiety
  • You have trouble getting through your daily responsibilities
  • Youâre withdrawing from friends and family
  • You think about suicide or hurting other people

If your stress has gotten to the point that youâre thinking of hurting yourself or someone else, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. You can also call one of the free suicide prevention helplines, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. You donât need to give your name.

Youre Short Of Breath

Your blood circulates oxygen around your body. When your stress response boosts how quickly youre sending blood around your bodythanks to your heart racingyour breathing might increase to provide you with more oxygen.

If you breathe too quickly , you can actually enhance a lot of the physical anxiety symptoms on this list because your oxygencarbon dioxide balance gets out of whack, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Thats why we often talk about belly breathing, or diaphragmatic breathing, says Dr. Potter. This is essentially breathing slowly and deeply by really using your diaphragm. By slowing down how quickly youre breathing, you have more of a chance to get the oxygen you need, Dr. Potter explains.

How Are Anxiety Disorders Treated

You can check what treatment and care is recommended for anxiety disorders on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence website.

NICE produce guidelines for how health professionals should treat certain conditions. NICE only provide guidelines for:

  • Generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder,
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder and body dysmorphic disorder ,
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder , and
  • Social anxiety disorder.

The NHS does not have to follow these recommendations. But they should have a good reason for not following them.

We have described some of the treatments for anxiety disorders below. The treatments you will be offered depend upon the type of anxiety disorder you are experiencing.

Monitoring your symptomsSome anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety disorder may get better by itself with no treatment at all. Or after education and advice from your doctor. Your doctor will monitor your symptoms to see if they improve. And they will talk to you about medications that you can get without a prescription. These are sometimes called over-the-counter medications.

How To Help Children With Anxiety

Anxiety in children is natural and common. In fact, one in eight children will experience anxiety. As children grow up and learn from their parents, friends, and caretakers, they typically develop the skills to calm themselves and cope with feelings of anxiety.

But, anxiety in children can also become chronic and persistent, developing into an anxiety disorder. Uncontrolled anxiety may begin to interfere with daily activities, and children may avoid interacting with their peers or family members.

Can Anxiety Cause Permanent Symptoms

Complete Question

At the beginning of my struggle with anxiety, I had a few symptoms that came and went. Now, my anxiety symptoms are with me all the time. I’m starting to think that anxiety can cause permanent symptoms. Can anxiety cause permanent symptoms?

Answer

While anxiety can cause persistent symptoms, based on our personal and professional experiences with anxiety disorder and recovery, no, ALL anxiety symptoms subside when we’ve dealt with our anxiety issues and eliminated the body’s chronic stress. This can be your expectation.

Anxiety symptoms are symptoms of stress. Eliminating anxious behavior and reducing stress will eventually eliminate the stress that causes persistent symptoms.

Unhealthy stress = sensations and symptoms of stress

Healthy stress = no sensations and symptoms of stress

So again, completely eliminating anxiety symptoms should be your expectation if you do the right work.

If you are experiencing chronic symptoms, that means your body has become chronically stressed, which we call stress-response hyperstimulation. Excessive physical stress and overly apprehensive behavior can cause chronic stress. As long as the body is chronically stressed, it can exhibit symptoms of stress, and of any type, number, intensity, duration, and frequency.

Persevering with your recovery efforts, and for long enough, will cause the cessation of ALL anxiety- and stress-caused sensations and symptoms.

Risk Factors For Anxiety Disorder

Some things also make you more likely to develop an anxiety disorder. These are called risk factors. Some risk factors you canât change, but others you can.

Risk factors for anxiety disorders include:

  • History of mental health disorder. Having another mental health disorder, like depression, raises your risk for anxiety disorder.
  • Childhood sexual abuse. Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse or neglect during childhood is linked to anxiety disorders later in life.
  • Trauma. Living through a traumatic event increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder , which can cause panic attacks.
  • Negative life events. Stressful or negative life events, like losing a parent in early childhood, increase your risk for anxiety disorder.
  • Severe illness or chronic health condition. Constant worry about your health or the health of a loved one, or caring for someone who is sick, can cause you to feel overwhelmed and anxious.
  • Substance abuse. The use of alcohol and illegal drugs makes you more likely to get an anxiety disorder. Some people also use these substances to hide or ease anxiety symptoms.
  • Being shy as a child. Shyness and withdrawal from unfamiliar people and places during childhood is linked to social anxiety in teens and adults.
  • Low self-esteem. Negative perceptions about yourself may lead to social anxiety disorder.

Stress And Your Health

Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous.

Stress is your bodyâs reaction to a challenge or demand. In short bursts, stress can be positive, such as when it helps you avoid danger or meet a deadline. But when stress lasts for a long time, it may harm your health.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders

We dont fully understand what causes anxiety disorders. But it is thought that the following factors can cause anxiety.

Genetics. Some people seem to be born more anxious than others. You may get anxiety through your genes.

Life experience. This could be bad experiences such as being abused or losing a loved one. It could also include big changes in life such as moving home, losing your job or pregnancy.

Drugs. Caffeine in coffee and alcohol can make you feel anxious. Illegal drugs, also known as street drugs can also have an effect.

Circumstances. Sometimes you know what is causing your anxiety. When the problem goes, so does your anxiety.

Biological Causes Of Anxiety Disorders

Depression vs Anxiety

Genetics and biology play a role in the creation of anxiety disorders. Not only does anxiety appear to run in families – if you take two people with similar experiences, one may have an anxiety disorder, one may not, and the only difference between them may be genetic, or at least influenced by the body more than the mind. Biological causes include:

How To Tell If You’re Having An Anxiety Attack

If you feel like you had severe anxiety, then you had an anxiety attack. Any form of severe anxiety can count as an attack. But for those that are experiencing something more like panic attacks, the experience tends to be similar between different people.

Recall that anxiety attacks can mimic other health problems. If you haven’t been to a doctor, it’s a good idea to go at least once to rule out any more serious issues. Make sure your doctor knows about anxiety, however. Not all doctors are aware of the severity of anxiety attack symptoms. Some may not believe that anxiety can cause so many physical symptoms and sensations, but it absolutely can. Thats why its so important to find the right doctor.

The symptoms below are often experienced differently by different people. During an anxiety attack, your body experiences a wave of stress that is so profound, it’s difficult to know exactly how your individual body will react. Yet below are some of the most common symptoms of an anxiety attack:

You may not experience all of these symptoms at once either, and each one may cause various degrees of severity. You may also feel as though there is no way that it is an anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks and panic attacks are often so severe that the sufferers live in constant fear of the symptoms coming back.

Anxiety attacks also tend to peak around 10 minutes . Then as they dissipate, they often leave you feeling fatigued and drained, possibly fearful of another attack.

Do Children Get Anxiety

Studies show that just over 7 percent of children aged 3 to 17 have a current anxiety problem. Thats approximately 4.4 million children in the U.S.. More and more children are being diagnosed with anxietyincidence rose from 5.5 percent to 6.4 percent between 2007and 2012 alone.

Experts point to several factors prominent among them is the way that parents often try to shield their kids from feeling bad over the normal lumps and bumps of life. Noah is disappointed because he didnt get chosen for the soccer team. Instead of helping the child understand which athletic skills might need more work, and helping him process the dejection, a parent protests to the school or coach. The net effect is that the child fails to develop coping skills for minor disappointments, and the lack of coping skills turns even minor challenges into significant sources of anxiety. In that way, the anxieties of the adults create anxious children.

Respiratory And Cardiovascular Systems

Can anxiety cause depression?

Stress hormones affect your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. During the stress response, you breathe faster in an effort to quickly distribute oxygen-rich blood to your body. If you already have a breathing problem like asthma or emphysema, stress can make it even harder to breathe.

Under stress, your heart also pumps faster. Stress hormones cause your blood vessels to constrict and divert more oxygen to your muscles so youll have more strength to take action. But this also raises your blood pressure.

As a result, frequent or chronic stress will make your heart work too hard for too long. When your blood pressure rises, so do your risks for having a stroke or heart attack.
