The Role Of Medication In Anxiety Treatment

Social Anxiety: Drugs and Medication (My Story)

When youre overwhelmed by heart-pounding panic, paralyzed by fear, or exhausted from yet another sleepless night spent worrying, youll do just about anything to get relief. And theres no question that when anxiety is disabling, medication may help. But are drugs always the best answer?

Many different types of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including traditional anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines and newer options like SSRI antidepressants . These drugs can provide temporary relief, but they also come with side effects and safety concernssome significant.

They are also not a cure. In fact, there are many questions about their long-term effectiveness. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, benzodiazepines lose their therapeutic anti-anxiety effect after 4 to 6 months of regular use. And a recent analysis reported in JAMA Psychiatry found that the effectiveness of SSRIs in treating anxiety has been overestimated, and in some cases is no better than placebo.

Whats more, it can be very difficult to get off anxiety medications without difficult withdrawals, including rebound anxiety that can be worse than your original problem.

How Benzodiazepines Work For Anxiety

Benzodiazepines affect the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors of the brain. This action results in slowing of the central nervous system , inducing a state of relaxation. Benzodiazepines are fairly quick-acting, relieving symptoms in a short amount of time.

They may also be used to treat insomnia, which can be both a symptom of anxiety or a contributing factor. Anxiety may interfere with sleep, but a lack of sleep may also lead to or worsen symptoms of anxiety.

Depending on your condition and symptoms, benzodiazepines may be taken once per day, multiple times per day, or on an as-needed basis. Your doctor may begin with a low initial dose that may be increased if you are still experiencing symptoms. The therapeutic dosage varies greatly from individual to individual and may depend on the severity of ones symptoms and his or her unique body chemistry.

In addition to prescribing benzodiazepines, your doctor may also recommend psychotherapy to help treat your anxiety. Research has found that combining medications and therapy may be the most effective treatment option. A type of therapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the methods most frequently used to treat anxiety.

Which Benzodiazepines Are Used For Anxiety

They can also be used with antidepressants initially while antidepressants take time to work.

“They’re a powerful tool,” says Duckworth, “but you have to be really smart about their use.”

  • Light-headedness
  • Trouble sleeping

Beta-blockers can be very helpful but in a limited way, says Dr. Salcedo. They are most commonly used for performance anxiety. They are really good for the physical symptoms such as heart racing, sweating, shakiness, but they work less well for the anxious thoughts that might be causing the symptoms.

Serotonin And Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors

If SSRIs don’t help ease your anxiety, you may be prescribed a different type of antidepressant known as a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor .

This type of medicine increases the amount of serotonin and noradrenaline in your brain.

Examples of SNRIs you may be prescribed include:

  • insomnia
  • sweating

SNRIs can also increase your blood pressure, so your blood pressure will be monitored regularly during treatment.

As with SSRIs, some of the side effects are more common in the first 1 or 2 weeks of treatment, but these usually settle as your body adjusts to the medication.

Are There Any Non

Anxiety can consume peoples lives and prevent them from living fully. It is a challenging issue and can be a clinical mood disorder that demands medication. Its important that along with anti-anxiety medication, you also utilize the other therapy that can help manage anxiety. Its understandable to look for alternatives for your anxiety based on the benzodiazepines addiction rate. There are anti anxiety herbs on the market that may help ease the body and mind from stress. Natural supplements may not cause addiction but they are still potentially harmful. Kava, for example had promise of being a viable natural anxiety medication. Reports found that it caused serious liver damage even when its used for a short period of time. Herbs like kava are somewhat sedating which is why they can relax you. They are non-addictive relaxants. Some will consume excessive herbs to try to get to a relaxed place in their mind. Passionflower, chamomile, and lavender are all means of relaxing. If someone has an anxiety disorder, these options probably arent potent enough to prevent panic attacks and other serious anxiety symptoms.

Actually I was asking if anyone is taking benadryl as an over the counter drug to relief anxiety symptoms, then kindly share with me.I had a very bad experience with klonopin because it stopped working and I had nocturnal panic attacks. It took 8 months for me to taper it off completely.I am asking whether the long term use makes it less effective.I am afraid of nocturnal panics because they are back and last night I took benadryl and I slept peacefully.I doctor is not listening me and simply saying that when you have panic then start running just as if you are running on treadmill.I can’t do this because I am in half a sleep when this happens.

So How Does Phenibut Work

Phenibut works on the GABA receptors in the brain, more specifically the GABA-b receptors.

These are the receptors in the brain that are activated when you drink alcohol or take an anxiety medication like Xanax or Ativan.

Unlike with prescription anxiety drugs, however, Phenibut in large part does not affect motor coordination and function.

That is, at the right doses.

If you take a large dose , it can and will make you tired.

However, at small doses , it will not.

What it will do is severely diminish your anxiety, as well as:

  • Give you a moderate increase in cognitive processes
  • Increase confidence and pro-social behavior
  • Increase sexual performance and pleasure

Dependency On Over The Counter Stress Relief Medications Can Be A Problem

PPT

Like many other types of drugs, anti-anxiety medications do have the potential to become addictive. In fact, one of the known side effects of many stress relieving drugs is developing a dependency on the medicine in order to function.

This happens because the medications give you those feel good sensations or reward pathways within the brain that you would get from taking drugs like heroin. You might not have a substance abuse history in your family and you might be someone who has never become dependent on a drug in your life.

However, because of the way anti-anxiety medication works on the brain, you can easily cross the line because over time, the effectiveness of the medication lowers. So what happens then is that people end up taking more and more of the drug because their tolerance level has increased.

They have to take a higher dosage of the medication in order to get any relief. This is why most anti-anxiety prescriptions are written for short term use only and are heavily monitored by doctors.

Over time, what happens is that anti-anxiety drugs have been known to build up in your system. When that occurs, you actually end up with too much of the drug in your body. This can lead to a state of being medicated beyond your bodys ability to metabolize it fast enough.

The Downside Of Taking Medicine For Stress Relief

The prescription or over the counter stress relief medications can cause you to feel sleepy during the day and can also rob you of energy. Youll feel lethargic as if youre a beat behind. Other side effects of the medications include slowing down your ability to react.

While that might not seem like a big deal, it can impact your ability to drive a car as well as react in any emergency situation. Because the medications affect the brain, you may start to notice that you have trouble speaking clearly.

You wont be able to concentrate as well and you can experience a lack of clarity in your thinking. Some people refer to this as brain fog. Taking medicine for stress relief can give you problems walking because it can cause you to feel like the room is spinning.

You might experience problems with dizziness and feel like youre going to pass out. Other side effects include things like trouble recalling events due to struggling with memory retention.

You might also feel sick to your stomach and have a loss of appetite. Some people also experience problems with comprehension and struggling with feelings of depression is also common on stress relief medications.

Providing Exercise And Entertainment

Lastly, its important to consider the role that boredom can play in leading a pet to feel anxious. Ensure your dog is getting adequate exercise needs or has a job to complete, recommends Dr. Burch. Dogs should be exercised daily for at least an hour of cardio.Without regular exercise, stress can manifest as tensionwhich leads to health problems like chronic pain and digestive issues, explains Dr Burch. She also recommends adding enrichment into your environment with puzzle toys, Snufflemats, lures, and other novel toys to help keep your dog engaged even while you are away.

If youve tried all you can at home to help your anxious dogs but are concerned that they may need more help, its important to contact a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination to rule out any painful area that can lead to anxiety. Additionally, they may recommend baseline blood work to rule out any metabolic or organ disease leading to the symptoms, Dr. Burch says. Based on these results, a veterinarian may then recommend some natural supplements or medication.
