Are Supplements Ok With My Prescriptions

If a doctor diagnosed you with an anxiety disorder, theres a good chance youre taking a prescription drug. Many people with anxiety or depression take drugs known as SSRIs that work by changing your brain chemistry. Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, and Zoloft are common SSRIs.

You should be aware that herbal remedies are not harmless. Adding them to other drugs might cause serious problems. Those problems may include fever, diarrhea, chills, extreme drowsiness, or seizures. Taking vitamins is often OK. To be on the safe side, dont take any supplements before asking your doctor. If you are taking supplements or any over-the-counter medications, make sure to tell you doctor about them.

Anxiety Medications And Anxiety Conditions

Before discussing medications, it’s important to remember that not all anxiety is the same, just as not all anxiety medications affect people in the same way. Different medicines affect each person differently, so there is rarely a simple answer for which medication to try.

It’s also important to emphasize that medications should never be taken alone. Anxiety medications can cause physical and psychological dependency. If you only take anxiety medicine, you can lose the ability to cope with anxiety without medication. Then, if you stop taking the medication or it becomes ineffective , you may severely struggle to cope with anxiety in the future. Always make sure you’re using methods of controlling anxiety that do not involve medication if you choose to try an anxiety drug.

Over The Counter Anxiety Medication Alternatives

Like most people, I suffer from a bit of anxiety here and there.

Its never usually anything serious, but I have my days.

For random bouts of anxiety, my doctor has prescribed me Ativan to take on an as needed basis.

Its pretty rare that I take it, but when I do it knocks the hell out of any anxiety I may be experienced.

For a little bit at least

One of the biggest problems with anxiety medications is that they normally end up making your anxiety worse in the short and long-term.

For example, when I take Lorazepam, the anxiety is completely gone for around 24 hours.

However, undoubtedly 12 hours after that Ill start to see a surge in my anxiety levels, worse than they were before.

This is no way to treat the underlying cause of anxiety

Its like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound.

Luckily, there are some OTC options that DO work, and will not skyrocket your anxiety levels when you stop taking it.

The medications and herbal alternatives Ill be talking about below are all some that I have personally have tested.

While theyre not exactly the best anxiety relieving products on the market, they can help.

And consequentially, you dont need to jump through hoops to get them.

Ive divided up these anxiety alternatives into herbal alternatives and over the counter medications.

Some are only available online, some are only available in stores, and some are available both online and in stores.

I note that at the end of each section.

The Strongest Anxiety Medications

The strongest type of anxiety medication currently available is benzodiazepines, more specifically Xanax. It is important to note that benzodiazepines are not the only medication used to treat anxiety however, they are the most potent and habit-forming. Other types of medication commonly used to treat anxiety include:

  • Beta-blockers.
  • Anticonvulsant medications.
  • Mild tranquilizers.

If a person wants to stay away from prescription medications completely, some over-the-counter medications can help alleviate the symptoms of an anxiety attack. For example, a person might take acetaminophen with diphenhydramine, something along the lines of Advil PM. However, it is never recommended to self-medicate a disorder of any kind. Doing so can be extremely dangerous.

Over-the-counter anxiety meds have a lot of appeal. After all, you can pick them up easily at your local grocery store’s pharmacy section. They can cost less than prescription drugs, especially if you don’t have insurance. Why, then, should you bother going to your doctor for a prescription? Actually, there may be some very good reasons why you might want to make that trip. Here are some facts about the differences between OTC and prescription anxiety meds.

Types of Anxiety Meds

Anxiety is extremely common in modern society. In fact, it’s the number one mental illness among adults in the U.S. It’s no wonder that many different solutions are available to treat it. Not all anxiety meds are created equal, but most of them do have some benefits. Here are some of the most common types of anxiety medicines.

Herbal Anxiety Meds

Some of the most commonly used herbs for anxiety include:

  • Valerian root
  • Holy basil
  • Green tea
  • Lycopodium
  • Stramonium

What Drugs Are Prescribed For Anxiety?

When Are OTC Meds Best for Anxiety?

The Role Of Medication In Anxiety Treatment

When youre overwhelmed by heart-pounding panic, paralyzed by fear, or exhausted from yet another sleepless night spent worrying, youll do just about anything to get relief. And theres no question that when anxiety is disabling, medication may help. But are drugs always the best answer?

Many different types of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including traditional anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines and newer options like SSRI antidepressants . These drugs can provide temporary relief, but they also come with side effects and safety concernssome significant.

They are also not a cure. In fact, there are many questions about their long-term effectiveness. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, benzodiazepines lose their therapeutic anti-anxiety effect after 4 to 6 months of regular use. And a recent analysis reported in JAMA Psychiatry found that the effectiveness of SSRIs in treating anxiety has been overestimated, and in some cases is no better than placebo.

Whats more, it can be very difficult to get off anxiety medications without difficult withdrawals, including rebound anxiety that can be worse than your original problem.

Drug Interactions And Overdose

While benzodiazepines are relatively safe when taken only occasionally and in small doses, they can be dangerous and even deadly when combined with other central nervous system depressants. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before combining medications.

Dont drink on benzodiazepines. When mixed with alcohol, benzodiazepines can lead to fatal overdose.

Dont mix with painkillers or sleeping pills. Taking benzodiazepines with prescription pain or sleeping pills can also lead to fatal overdose.

Antihistamines amplify their effects. Antihistaminesfound in many over-the-counter sleep, cold, and allergy medicinesare sedating on their own. Be cautious when mixing with benzodiazepines to avoid over-sedation.

Be cautious when combining with antidepressants. SSRIs such as Prozac and Zoloft can heighten benzodiazepine toxicity. You may need to adjust your dose accordingly.

Paradoxical effects of benzodiazepines

The benzodiazepines work because they slow down the nervous system. But sometimes, for reasons that arent well understood, they have the opposite effect. Paradoxical reactions are most common in children, the elderly, and people with developmental disabilities. They include:

  • Increased anxiety, irritability, agitation, aggression, and rage
  • Mania, impulsive behavior, and hallucinations

Antihistamines And Other Sedatives

Stress Relief Pills Over the Counter | for anxiety and depression

Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, are used to manage allergic reactions, but they can also cause sedation as a side effect. Some people take Benadryl for anxiety because of the calming and sleep-inducing side effects that it can have. However, these effects are less than you would experience with prescription sedatives such as benzodiazepines.

Benadryl takes about 15 to 30 minutes to start working and its peak effect happens around 2 to 4 hours. An adult dose to obtain sedating effects is between 25 and 50 milligrams.

In addition to the sedating effects of antihistamines, other over-the-counter drugs can induce sedation and drowsiness, most notably those marketed as muscle relaxers or sleep medications.

Benadryl is not the only antihistamine that is sometimes used for anxiety relief. Doctors may also sometimes prescribe Vistaril , an antihistamine that is similar to Benadryl, for the short-term treatment of anxiety.
