Can Wellbutrin Help With Anxiety

How To Take And Store

Wellbutrin for depression, anxiety, and ADHD

You should always take your medication as directed. Immediate-release Wellbutrin tablets can be broken if necessary, but they are small enough that doing so is not usually needed. The drug can be taken on an empty stomach or with food and should be stored at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

If you happen to miss a dose of bupropion, take it as soon as you remember. Any remaining doses for the day should be taken at least six hours apart. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose. Taking two doses at the same time can increase your risk of experiencing a seizure or an accidental overdose.

Never stop taking your medication without help from your doctor. If you stop suddenly, your symptoms may worsen or you may experience withdrawal. If you want to stop taking Wellbutrin, talk to your doctor about tapering off of your medication gradually.

Because of their safety, tolerability, and efficacy in treating panic disorder and common comorbidities, SSRIs are the first choice of drug therapy for treating panic disorder.2,3 The initial activating effects of SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants can be especially troubling.4 As a result, many patients abandon SSRI therapy before they experience any benefits. Following are several strategies to help patients overcome resistance to therapy.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed

The combination of naltrexone and bupropion is used along with a reduced calorie diet and exercise plan to help adults who are obese, or who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems, to lose weight and then to keep from gaining back that weight. Naltrexone is in a class of medications called opiate antagonists. Bupropion is in a class of medications called antidepressants. These medications work together on two areas of the brain, the hunger center and the reward system, to reduce appetite and help control cravings.

Can Wellbutrin Make Anxiety Worse

In clinical trials, some of the test subjects developed anxiety-related side effects shortly after they started taking Wellbutrin. It was also noted that these effects are exacerbated in the period following a dosage increase. It is believed that the effects are a result of the dosage is increased too quickly.

These Wellbutrin anxiety-related side effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Restlessness and agitation

According to the FDA, up to 2% of the people who experienced these side effects discontinued their use of the medication. For some subjects, these side effects were so severe that they required treatment with anti-anxiety medication and sedatives.

Besides anxiety, there are other side effects associated with the use of Wellbutrin. The more common ones include throat inflammation, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitations, and inexplicable weight loss. Less common side effects include an increased risk of seizures and worsened suicidal ideation.

Be sure to get in touch with your doctor immediately if you experience severe and side effects when taking Wellbutrin. For most people, the side effects usually go away with time as their body adjusts to the medication.

How Does Wellbutrin Work To Help Anxiety

Wellbutrin is in a class of drugs called aminoketones, and it affects the way your body produces certain neurotransmittersspecifically, dopamine and norepinephrine.

Both of these are crucial to your mood.

Dopamine regulates a variety of functionsmost notably, sleep, pleasure, motivation and mood.

Norepinephrine keeps your body alert, pumping blood through your system, keeping you awake, and more.

People with depression may have low levels of dopamine, which is why Wellbutrin is thought to help.

For this reason, its also used for people who deal with anxiety as a result of depression.

Its important to note that generic bupropion can be just as effective in treating depression and anxiety as the name brandand its often most cost effective.

If you are interested in exploring taking bupropion for your anxiety, the first step is to talk to a healthcare professional and schedule an online psychiatry evaluation.

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

If you experience any side effects, however minor, consult with your healthcare provider to discuss whats right for you.

There are sometimes more severe side effects that can occur when taking bupropion. These include:

Both generic bupropion and the brand name Wellbutrin have what is called a black box safety warning from the FDA.

This is the most serious type of warning and it lets users know that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal ideation and/or behavior in children, adolescents and young adults.

Strategy No : When Needed Use Inexpensive Treatments

One barrier to adequate treatment of panic disorder is the potentially high cost of therapy .1,46 The monthly cost of SSRI therapy can exceed $100 for the higher dosages of medication that are often required.21 Imipramine has proven efficacy in treating panic disorder, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder. The monthly cost of therapy can be as low as $8.21 Generic benzodiazepines are also inexpensive .1,46

Formal CBT programs can cost more than $1,000 for one course of treatment. Anecdotally, self-help groups like Agoraphobics in Motion, 1719 Crooks Rd., Royal Oak, MI 48067 telephone: 248-547-0400, can be inexpensive and helpful.

What Other Information Should I Know

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory.

Before having any laboratory test, tell your doctor and the laboratory personnel that you are taking the combination of naltrexone and bupropion.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

  • Other non-medication you are currently using . Your doctor will then explain how Bupropion works with the medication and adjust your dosage accordingly.

  • Any other medical problems or psychiatric issues you have including seizures, anorexia nervosa or bulimia and bipolar disorder history.

Antipsychotics For Ordinary Depression

“I’m taking an antidepressant, but I’m still not where I want to be with my symptoms.”

If that line sounds familiar, it’s because you might have heard it in recent television commercials for the powerful psychiatric drug aripiprazole . Originally approved to treat the disabling mental illnesses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Abilify is now, with permission from the Food and Drug Administration, being pitched to people with depression who haven’t gotten relief from milder drugs such as SSRIs.

In December 2009, Abilify’s competitor quetiapine succeeded in winning the same approval as an add-on for depression.

The mass marketing of hard-core psychiatric drugs is worrisome, said Julie Donohue, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. “People might think from the commercial that everybody’s going to get better, when really it’s a minority of patients who respond to the treatment,” she said.

Another issue is that the studies conducted to secure Abilify’s approval as a depression add-on lasted only six weeks. “That means we don’t know the long-term benefits or harms of the drug for this use, which is a problem because people will take Abilify for monthsand probably years,” said Steven Woloshin, M.D., a professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.

Something else the ads don’t mention is the cost of the drugs: up to 45 times as much as many antidepressants.

Bottom line

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

These include fluoxetine , paroxetine , sertraline , fluvoxamine , citalopram , and escitalopram . They tend to be the first line choice for multiple anxiety disorders and depression. They are technically classified as antidepressants .

Sertraline is FDA approved for multiple conditions including: Major Depression, OCD, PTSD, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. While not all SSRIs have this many FDA approved indications, we often use the other ones for the same conditions. Pharmacy companies do not always bother pursuing FDA approvals due to cost reasons and the realization that the meds will be used off-label. It is completely legal and ethical to use medications for off-label purposes, but ideally the patient and provider should have a discussion about this first.

While SSRIs can have an immediate effect, the full effect can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks depending on the person. They are generic and cheap. I tend to prefer generic meds b/c they have been around longer with a proven track record, and the risks are known too . This is my style, and there is certainly nothing wrong with those who do prescriber newer meds .

While they are overall fairly well tolerated and arguably with less side effects than older classes of antidepressants, some people may be more sensitive to side effects of this class and may do better with older classes like tricyclic antidepressants or MAOIs .

Why Might One Take Wellbutrin And Buspirone Together

Some people are recommended Wellbutrin and Buspirone together as it has been seen that Buspirone helps with some depression symptoms that may have been caused by anxiety.

In such cases, or in the case of a Mixed Anxiety and Depression Disorder, one may be prescribed both Wellbutrin and Buspirone, though it is rare to be prescribed both for a predominantly Depressive or Anxiety-related disorder.

In the case of some people, it has also been noticed that a prescription of 300 mg Wellbutrin and Buspirone at the same time may cause side effects such as Hallucinations, visual illusions, dizziness, and confusion, however, there have been no evidence-based trials for this particular interaction.

At the same time it also seems that most people who take 150 mg Wellbutrin and Buspirone together, where Buspirone is also of a lower dosage, seems to alleviate symptoms they are experiencing without causing too many unnecessary side effects.

It is also approved for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder in addition to being indicated as an effective smoking cessation aid.

Experts have yet to understand how exactly Wellbutrin works to treat and manage depression. However, it is thought that the therapeutic effects are a result of the drug increasing the levels of specific neurotransmitters in the brain, namely dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters help to improve mood, memory, concentration and sleep.
