My Teens Social Anxiety Is Getting Worse

Her social anxiety is getting worse. I cant fix it and there is a part of me that is so frustrated with myself and with her that I feel like I could break something with one bare hand.

Yes, Ive tried therapy. Yes I force her to do things in an encouraging tone because I think if she gets used to being out among people shell get more comfortable.

But, there are times when Im so tired and exhausted by it, I just order her food for her or we stay at home because I dont have it in me to try and pry her out of the house. These are times that I feel the most angry at both of us.

Im sure consistency is key here but when you have more than one teenager to think about, there are times you just have to go to the movies or the game while leaving one behind because you have zero fight in you. My other kids shouldnt suffer and be forced to stay home because they have one sibling who doesnt want to go and I dont want to have to argue the same damn argument every day.

The older my daughter gets shell be 15 this year the worse her anxiety gets. She already talks about how she doesnt want to take drivers education and how she wants to get a job but doesnt want to be around people.

Im having a moment in motherhood that I used to fear: Im throwing up my hands because I literally have no idea what to do or how to help her.

The therapist will want you to continue to practice your new helpful behaviors until they become your new automatic way of coping.

    It might be hard to flip the switch in your mind from avoid everyone to go back to socializing. This can be especially true as vaccines rollout but not everyone has yet been vaccinated. How do you know how to behave around other people? Are they still social distancing or do they want a handshake from you?

    Below are some tips to deal with this specific type of anxiety.

    • If you arent yet comfortable with physical interaction, its OK to avoid hugs until you feel like its safer for you personally.
    • If you have patterns that have become ingrained, such as crossing the street to get away from other people, work on slowly changing these patterns since it will be hard to think in a different way.
    • Realize that safety and anxiety are two different things, and get clear with yourself about why you are avoiding. If its because of anxiety, then take efforts to challenge the fear instead of pretending that you are still keeping yourself safe from the pandemic. Remember, avoidance only increases anxiety.
