I am just about out of my anxiety medication, which is bringing on… yep, more anxiety! Years ago I had been prescribed anxiety medication through my OBGYN, I take it only on an as-needed basis . I ran out, but didn’t really need them anymore. A few years later, I had such a severe anxiety attack I landed in the ER… and they had prescribed me some more. Mind you, this bottle of 10 pills has lasted me almost 2 years. I’ve only got 1 left, and without insurace, I don’t see a regular PCP and I feel like if I go to some random doctor they’re just going to think I’m some sort of addict looking for drugs … We see a couples counselor, and I thought about mentioning it to him, but even though he’s a doctor I don’t think he’s authorized to prescribe medication. Where do I go? I just need my anxiety meds on hand for those emergency, sneaky anxiety attacks.
Do I Have To Take My Anxiety Medication For Life
Not always. It depends on your symptoms and how controlled they become over time.
As mentioned, if youre taking an antidepressant, it may take a few weeks before your symptoms improve. Its recommended to keep taking your medication for at least 12 months if youre benefiting from the medication. This is meant to help prevent symptoms from getting worse again.
After 12 months or so, you and your healthcare provider may decide to continue the medication or to gradually stop taking it.

When benzos were introduced to the market in the 1950s, there was excitement as they were considered safer compared to barbiturates, which had been used to treat anxiety. By the 1970s, benzos made it to the list of the most highly prescribed medications.
Benzos are mainly used to treat anxiety disorders, such as phobias, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. They are mostly used for a short period at the beginning of the treatment. That is because it may take a few weeks for the main pharmacological treatment for anxiety, antidepressants, to kick in. During that time, if anxiety is severe and debilitating, benzodiazepines may be prescribed for temporary use.
Benzos are also prescribed for occasional situations of high anxiety, such as that caused by phobias. The main treatment of phobias, such as excessive fear of animals, places, and social interactions, is psychotherapy. Sometimes, however, phobias can interfere with oneââ¬â¢s functioning just sporadically, and the person may not be interested in investing in therapy. For example, a person with fear of flying who may fly on a plane once or twice a year may choose to take a benzo before flying. However, for a businessman or woman who flies several times a months, psychotherapy is recommended.

What Are Some Drug Interactions For Anti
Benzodiazepines
- Alprazolam increases blood levels of the antidepressants imipramine and desipramine. Alprazolam may also interact with some calcium channel blockers and with grapefruit juice. Carbamazepine decreases blood levels of alprazolam.
- Combining benzodiazepines with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants can cause increased sedation and potentially dangerous respiratory depression.
- Fluoxetine, propoxyphene, and oral contraceptives increase blood levels of alprazolam , as do ketoconazole, itraconazole, nefazodone, fluvoxamine, and erythromycin.
- Oral antifungal agents such as ketoconazole and itraconazole may significantly decrease blood levels of clonazepam .
- Serious side effects, including respiratory arrest, may occur if lorazepam is combined with clozapine. Dosage of lorazepam should be halved when taken with valproate or probenecid.
- Theophylline and aminophylline may affect the sedative effects of lorazepam.
- Several drugs can increase the blood levels of triazolam , including isoniazid, oral contraceptives, and ranitidine. Ketoconazole, itraconazole, and nefazodone have a profound effect on triazolam metabolism and should not be taken with it. Grapefruit juice also increases the amount of triazolam in the blood.
- Triazolam may interact with calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, ergotamine, amiodarone, and cyclosporine.

Ihave been taking xanax the past 18 years only as needed. This medication not only helps with my severe anxiety and anger problems. My current doctor for the past 2.5 years has been giving me xanax to take twice a day for a 30 day supply and this usually last me about 6months. Well my PCP has been instructed by his NP that new guidelines state he cant prescribe xanax but klonopin is ok. Is this truely a guidline in MS or simply a recommendation? As I can not find any literature confirming this. Although the klonopin is working ok it takes hours for my anger to subside when it would be immediate with xanax. My other complaint is that klonopin has a longer half life and remains in my body longer than xanax causing me to be extremely sleepy the morning after taking the klonopin but never had this problem with xanax. What are the prescrbing guidlines for these meda in mississippi? I think the NP is wrong and it is based solely on her personal bias for these drugs…as a matter of fact I have seen this NP refused to see patients if she THINKS they are trying to be seen just to gain narcotics. She is very judgemental and refuses to go into the room to see patients and will send them away without even speaking to these patients. I would to know of any new prescribing regulations or laws for PCP being able to prescribes these kinds of meds. Thanks
