Shortness of breath: Is it stress, anxiety or a symptom of COVID-19?

Panic disorder is characterized by repeated, unexpected panic attacks episodes of sudden fear and feelings of danger or impending doom, along with physical symptoms. Ive probably never been so happy to learn anything! Over a year or two, I massaged my intercostals regularly until I stopped having these episodes at all, and that benefit has now persisted for many years.

Lung Conditions Associated With Shortness Of Breath

Emphysema: This is a type of COPD that causes poor lung function and is most often caused by smoking. Not smoking or quitting is the best prevention and treatment, but COPD diseases can also be treated with antibiotics, inhaled steroids, and bronchodilators.

Asthma: Asthma is the inflammation of the airways causing them to narrow, which limits breathing and causes tightness in the chest and coughing. The severity of asthma ranges from person to person, and it is a fairly common condition. Asthma is a life-long condition, and it can be treated both short-term with inhalers and long-term with medications such as inhaled corticosteroids.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes inflammation and fluid accumulation. Most types are contagious, and it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Pneumonia is treated with medications to alleviate symptoms and antibiotics.

Pulmonary edema: This condition is marked by excess fluid accumulation in the lungs and can be related to heart issues. Shortness of breath is the most common symptom of this condition, and it can be treated with medications and oxygen therapy.

Cold and Flu: Cold and flu viruses impact your airways and lungs and can cause congestion, which interferes with breathing. They can also cause fluid to enter the lungs, which will also cause shortness of breath as a result of inflamed airways. There is no treatment for viruses, so symptoms are treated to keep individuals comfortable.

Easy To Follow Breathing Routine

There are ways to help deal with shortness of breath from anxiety. Try following these steps to get control of your breath.

  • Start by making sure youre in a comfortable position. This can be sitting up or lying down, as long as youre on a flat surface with your head supported.

  • Hold your breath in for four to seven seconds.
  • When its time to exhale, open your mouth and audibly let the breath out.
  • Repeat this for up to ten minutes for the best results.

In the researchers analysis of studies looking at HRV in people who were diagnosed with various types of anxiety disorder, including panic disorder, the results indicated the participants had a lower HRV than those without an anxiety disorder.

As the symptoms of panic attacks and heart attacks are similar, it is always best to seek immediate medical attention when in doubt.

What Can You Do When You Feel Short Of Breath

Mindful breathing may help you return to your typical breathing pattern during a panic attack or ground yourself afterwards. Follow these basic guidelines:

  • Notice your breath. Visualize yourself beginning to slow your breathing down. You may picture your stomach rising and falling at a very slow pace.
  • Place your hands on your rib cage. Now, inhale slowly through your nose, filling your rib cage with air. Slowly exhale through the nose, taking note of how the rib cage contracts.
  • Repeat several breaths, counting to 10 as you inhale and 10 as you exhale. With each breath, try to notice any tension in your face, neck, and shoulders. Imagine your breath flowing through any tension within your body.
  • Place your hands on your belly. Stay with your deep, smooth breathing. Take a deep breath in for 10 seconds and fill your belly with air. Notice how your belly rises into your hands as you inhale and how your navel pulls into the spine as you exhale for 10 seconds. Repeat for several more breaths.

    Now you understand the common stressors that cause anxiety and know that anxiety can cause shortness of breath, but what is your body doing when you feel like youre struggling to breathe?

    When were anxious, our body releases hormones in our body. When our fight or flight switch is in the on position, the human body reacts, whether we want it to or not. Your brain is telling your body to get more oxygen to your muscles, which can result in shortness of breath.

    When this happens, you may notice an increase in your heart rate, and your face can even become flushed. Your body is reacting as if you just ran for your life, even though you might be sitting in your bed.

    There is a sense of comfort knowing that your body is reacting how its supposed to in the event that you were actually in a threatening situation. While one moment you might feel like youre gasping for air, there are other symptoms you may experience as well.

    This reaction is only a problem when youre experiencing it in times that are disproportionate to the situation that caused it.
