While many people use the terms tic and twitch interchangeably, there are differences between these two forms of movements.
Tics. There are two types of tics — motor tics and vocal tics. These short-lasting sudden movements or uttered sounds occur suddenly during what is otherwise normal behavior. Tics are often repetitive, with numerous successive occurrences of the same action. For instance, someone with a tic might blink their eyes multiple times or twitch their nose repeatedly.
Motor tics can be classified as either simple or complex. Simple motor tics may include movements such as eye-blinking, nose-twitching, head-jerking, or shoulder-shrugging. Complex motor tics consist of a series of movements performed in the same order. For instance a person might reach out and touch something repeatedly or kick out with one leg and then the other.
Tics are often classified not as involuntary movements but as unvoluntary movements. This means that people are able to suppress the actions for a time. The suppression, though, results in discomfort that grows until it is relieved by performing the tic.
While people of all ages can experience tics, they are most prevalent in children. Experts say that around 20% of children experience tics. And tics are far more likely to affect boys than girls.
No one knows exactly what causes tics to occur. Stress and sleep deprivation seem to play a role in both the occurrence and severity of motor tics.
Creating A Tic Management Environment For Your Child
Even though tics are a neurological problem, they are heavily influenced by things that happen on a daily basis. You can probably tell when your childs tics are going to get worse or better based on what he or she is doing or where he is. From our time working with children with TS, we have noticed a number of things that make tics worse than they need to be and have made a set of principles you can follow to help your child with his tics.
How Long Does Anxiety Twitching Last
When muscle twitching symptoms are caused by apprehensive behavior and the accompanying stress response changes, as the anxious and stress response changes come to an end, this anxiety symptom should subside. Keep in mind, it can take up to 20 minutes or more for the body to recover from a major stress response.

Principle : Do Not React To Your Childs Tics
Reason: Tics like attention. Making comments about tics as they happen, asking the child to stop, laughing about tics, comforting a child when he has difficult tics, or even teasing a child about tics are all forms of attention that tics feed on. It is important to create a world for the child in which there are no reactions to tics. It should be as if they arent happening.
- If you find yourself wanting to comfort your child after he does a tic, say very little. Instead, wait until hes not ticcing as much and ask him how hes doing.
- If your children are teasing their brother/sister because of the tics, be clear and firm with them that they must not do this and discipline them in a way that will support this request.
- If your childs peers or relatives make comments about the tics, please pull them aside and ask them not to react to the tics.
- Sometimes tics can be funny, but dont laugh when they happen. Pretend as if they did not occur.
- If your child says an inappropriate word as a vocal tic, do not punish or react to what the word or phrase was. Instead, make it an expectation that your child apologize to you and explain to you that it was a tic.

When To See A Gp
Tics are not usually serious and they do not damage the brain.
You do not always need to see a GP if they’re mild and not causing problems. Sometimes they can disappear as quickly as they appear.
See a GP if you’re concerned about your or your child’s tics, you need support or advice, or the tics:
- occur very regularly, or become more frequent or severe
- cause emotional or social problems, such as embarrassment, bullying or social isolation
- cause pain or discomfort
- interfere with daily activities, school or work
- are accompanied by anger, depression or self harm
A GP should be able to diagnose a tic from a description of it and, if possible, seeing it. Recording a short video can be helpful, but be careful not to draw too much attention to the tic while filming as this can make it worse.
What Exactly Is A Tic
Tics are sudden, brief, stereotyped motor movements or vocalizations. Although they are involuntary, children will report whats called a premonitory urge to do the tic, and will feel a release of tension once it is done, says Dr. Khrizman.
If the child is able to concentrate on the movement, they may be able to suppress it for a short period of time however it will have to be released later on. This is why many parents will see these movements after they pick their child up from school, notes Dr. Khrizman.

What Are Anxiety Tics
Before we dive into anxiety tics, lets define tics quickly.
Tics are involuntary, repetitive movements or vocalizations. We all have them to some extent however, when they become excessive and start to interfere with our everyday lives, they may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition.
When people ask about anxiety tics specifically, they are most likely referring to tic disorders co-occurring with an obsessive-compulsive disorder or anxiety twitches.
The co-morbidity rate for individuals diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome is between 79%-90%. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder accounts for 66% of co-morbid TS diagnoses. Generalized Anxiety Disorders represent 36.1%.
So whereas there is not a specific anxiety tic, people who suffer from tic disorders have a statistically high likelihood of having a co-occurring anxiety disorder like OCD or GAD.
This accounts for much of the confusion or misuse of the term anxiety tics.
When people talk about anxiety tics, its also possible they are referring to what we colloquially call nervous tics.

What Parents Can Do
Parents who are concerned that a child may have a tic disorder should begin by visiting their pediatrician. The pediatrician can then determine if more help is needed and offer a referral to a neurologist or a psychiatrist. These doctors will want to rule out other possible issues that could be causing the tics, including:
- A seizure disorder
- A condition called PANS or PANDAS that causes acute-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Other neurological or movement disorders.
The initial realization that a child has a tic can be disturbing. But Dr. Nash suggests that once other medical diagnoses are ruled out, parents wait and watch instead of seeking treatment right away unless they are socially or functionally impairing. Parents are often more distressed by a childs tics than the child is, she notes. If a child has a mild tic that isnt bothering him, we usually encourage parents to wait and see if it resolves on its own.
Kids may not even be aware that their tics are anything out of the ordinary unless someone else draws attention to them. Teasing, bullying or embarrassment are often the biggest motivators for kids when it comes to seeking treatment, says Dr. Nash.
Treatment For Tourette Syndrome
Although there is no cure for TS, there are treatments available to help manage the tics. Many people with TS have tics that do not get in the way of their daily life and, therefore, do not need any treatment. However, medication and behavioral treatments are available if tics cause pain or injury interfere with school, work, or social life or cause stress.
TS often occurs with other conditions. Most children diagnosed with TS also have been diagnosed with at least one additional mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ,anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder . It is important to find out if a person with TS has any other conditions, and treat those conditions properly.

Muscle Twitching Without Anxious Thoughts
It should also be noted that muscle twitching doesnt need stressful thoughts, feelings, or events to occur. Many people find that their muscles twitch even during periods periods when the person is not experiencing any other noticeable anxiety symptoms.
For better or worse, it is genuinely possible to experience many anxiety signs and symptoms like muscle twitching even when you dont feel anxious in the moment. Long term stress affects the way your body works, and in many cases youll find that your anxiety still manifests even when you dont feel anxious.

Treatment Of Secondary Tic Disorders
Tic disorders secondary to CNS lesions or infection have been reported to improve with antipsychotic drug therapy.26,28 Tics are not commonly a disabling feature of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntingtons disease, and antipsychotics have the potential to worsen overall motor function. Risk of side effects must be weighed carefully against potential benefits in deciding whether to use a drug to treat secondary forms of tics. Of course, the main target of therapy is the primary illness itself. In patients with tardive phenomena including tics, discontinuation of the offending agent is suggested as first-line treatment, and improvement can be attained with use of clonazepam, an alpha-2-agonist, clozapine, or reintroduction of an anti-psychotic.112,113 When tics occur in a withdrawal emergent fashion, antipsychotics can be resumed and weaned at a more gradual rate.

Muscle Twitching And Anxiety
Muscle twitching can be a sign of anxiety and can cause a great deal of distress. Some people worry that their twitching may not just be anxiety, or that if it is just anxiety that they wont ever be able to control it. While muscle twitching is a common sign of anxiety, its rarely the only symptom.
Educating The Patient Family And School
Education of parents, teachers, and peers is a critical initial intervention. We inform patients and their parents that it is appropriate to tell others that they have tics, meaning that they cannot help making certain movements or sounds. We provide patients and parents with current information about the causes of tics and emphasize that they are not signs of psychological or emotional illness, a common misperception. Learning about the importance of genetic factors often relieves a sense of guilt in the patient and parent. Although serious psychosocial factors can exacerbate tics, we explain how tics change in type over time and that they naturally fluctuate in severity, so it is not necessary to search for psychological problems every time their child experiences more tics. We explain the process of voluntary suppression and emphasize there is no value for anyone to point out tics to the child or tell them to stop their tics. What is needed is an open, supportive family environment in which a child can comfortably approach their parents to let them know about problematic tics or other symptoms.

What Makes A Child Tic
Frequent eye blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder shrugging, sniffling, repetitive throat clearing or uncontrolled vocalization these are all symptoms of a tic. For a parent, seeing or hearing your child exhibit these unexpected movements or sounds can be extremely worrisome.
There are likely a ton of questions going through your head: Is my child having a seizure? What is causing this? Should I take them to the doctor? Will they have this tic forever?
These questions are completely normal. In fact, pediatric neurologist, of K. Hovnanian Childrens Hospital, informs that you are not alone in your concerns. Tics are incredibly common, as many as one in five children have a tic during their school years, and most tics go away on their own in less than a year, usually even shorter, shares Dr. Khrizman.

Find What Relaxes You
There are already things in your life that relax you. You may find it beneficial to make a list of things you enjoy and that help you to relax so you can reference it when symptoms of anxiety arise. When you notice your anxiety rising turn to those activities to help stop symptoms before they escalate.
For example, if you find that a warm bath is relaxing, don’t wait, draw a bath, maybe light some candles or add a few nice scents and get in. Whether it’s a bath, a shower, skipping stones at a park, getting a massage – if it works, do it right away, rather than allowing yourself to become overwhelmed by your anxiety.

Why Avoid These Tics
The main reason to avoid tics is that they leave people with a negative first impression of you. Even when you’re in a situation where nerves are normal or even expected, expressing them through a tic indicates that you aren’t in control of your anxiety. If you’re interviewing for a job or meeting someone new, this can indicate that you aren’t an ideal employee or that you might make a difficult friend.
A first impression is so important! If you’re afraid you have one of these tics or you know you do, try to get some people close to you to help you out by telling you when they see you doing the behavior. If it’s something you can block physically, like wearing acrylic nails to curb nail biting, go ahead and do that.
Even if your tics are invisible, though, they’re often indicators of stress and anxiety levels so high your health might be in danger. Instead of putting these feelings into nervous tics, seek out ways to lower your stress levels. If you can get to a point where you feel better about your life, you might find your tics disappearing on their own.
