Can Low Progesterone Cause Anxiety
The second half of the menstrual cycle is called the luteal phase. This is usually day 15-28 in a womans cycle, after ovulation. . This is when we typically see anxiety levels rise.
Once youve ovulated, progesterone rises and it stimulates the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor in your brain. GABA is the neurotransmitter that can reduce anxiety and stress levels. When stress hormones try to trigger a freak-out, GABA steps in and calms everything down.
However, if you are struggling with low progesterone or if you don’t ovulate, progesterone levels dont rise, and therefore GABA cant do its extremely important job.
This is when anxiety sets in.

A three-year University of Texas study examined the long-term effects of bioidentical hormone therapy on menopausal symptoms, including mood alterations such as anxiety.
