A study of blood flow in the brain published in 2001 found differences in the brains of social phobics when speaking in public. For this study, they used a type of neuroimaging called Positron Emission Tomography .

We can also learn to focus on people and how they make us feel instead of what they might be thinking about us. We can learn to see past our fears and realize that even if someone else has a terrible opinion of us, its not scary if we know what caused them to think that way.
For example, a child who is told that they are too loud or annoying will begin to fear judgment and pre-judgment from others. This causes them to self-censor because of imagined judgments from those around them. This leads to social anxiety and avoidance of any person or place they believe may judge them even if its only in their own minds.
The reality is, many people have judged themselves at one point in their lives for something that they believe is true about themselves. A person who believes that they are not worth anything will begin to feel inferior to others. A teenager who is told that they will end up flipping burgers for the rest of their life because they lack the intelligence to do much more will feel a sense of shame and inadequacy.
This is why I believe that everyone with social anxiety must find the root cause of social anxiety and rid themselves of it before they can truly heal.

First, it’s important to know that you are not abnormal if you have social anxiety. Many people have it. If you have unusually high anxiety and fear about social situations, talk openly with your doctor about treatment. Many people with social anxiety hide it extremely well. In fact, Ive found that social anxiety seems to be especially prevalent among people who might describe themselves as high-achievers or Type-A.
In other words, social anxiety is more prevalent than you would think in people who look like theyve got it all together on the outside. But on the inside, theyre plagued with self-doubt and imposter syndrome
- They constantly feel like theyre a fraud, not good enough, and that at any moment people are going to figure it out.
- Theyre in the habit of chronically comparing themselves to others and never feeling like they match up.
- They struggle to appreciate their wins and successes because as soon as something goes well, they immediately worry that its not good enough or that someone will find fault with them.
Of course, this struggle of feeling like a fraud tends to show up most frequently at work. And interestingly, is especially common among people who are higher up in a company or organizationas a client explained to me once, the higher you climb the further you have to fall.

From Severe Social Anxiety To High
The symptoms of some with high-functioning social anxiety were always mild or moderate. What theyve experienced is more stressful and life-altering than normal shyness, but their social anxiety was never powerful or intimidating enough to seriously hamper their ability to build relationships or achieve their goals.
However, the situation for many high-functioning social anxiety sufferers is different.
