When Is Trazodone Prescribed For Dogs

In veterinary medicine, Trazodone is considered if symptoms are so bad your pet is destroying property or having accidents in your home. This behavior needs to be treated right away before it gets even more out of control.

If your dog is exhibiting symptoms of anxiety caused by an imbalance of serotonin then there are two ways Trazodone is prescribed:

Its best to give Trazodone before the trigger happens so that your dog is already calm when it begins to work. For example, if your dog is noise-averse and its 5 pm on July 4th, its a good time to start administering the Trazodone before the fireworks start instead of after the first boom.

Another example is before a vet visit: if your dog is usually fearful at the vet, a dose of Trazodone before you get ready to go will allow the medication to work in time for the car ride.

The time of onset and how long it lasts does vary from dog to dog, so it will be informative to do a practice test a day or two before a potentially fearful event, so you can optimize the timing. Trazodone is given every 8 hours and as needed based on the dogs weight and response.

What Should I Do If My Dog Took Too Much Trazodone

Some dogs are more sensitive to Trazodone, and even when given a very low dosage, they will become very sedated. Sometimes you may accidentally have given your dog too much. If this happens, it is best to contact your vet. Many times, they may tell you what other signs that you need to look out for, and the next dosage decreases the amount that you are giving your dog by half.

Usually, signs that your dog has gotten too much Trazodone will start to show after 30 to 60 minutes. The most common signs of toxicity include ataxia and lethargy. Usually giving your dog time will help.

Trazodone Risks You Should Know About

Trazodone isnt without risks, however. It appears to be more likely than other sleep drugs to leave you feeling drowsy the next day, which increases the chance of having an accident, particularly while driving or using heavy machinery.

It can also cause abnormally low blood pressure and, in turn, trigger dizziness or even fainting, particularly in seniors, which can increase the risk of falling. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that seniors with dementia who were given trazodone as a sleep aid were as likely to fall as seniors given antipsychotics, other drugs that can cause sedation.

Trazodone can also cause heart rhythm disorders. And some evidence suggests that it can cause priapism, or persistent erection, a medical emergency that may require surgery and can lead to impotence if not treated promptly.

And a black box warning in the package insert notes that trazodone, like other antidepressants, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children and adolescents, even when taken at approved doses for depression.

Is Trazodone Like Xanax For Anxiety

Is taking trazodone for anxiety similar to taking a medication like Xanax?

Xanax is actually a different type of drug than trazodone. Xanax is a type of anti-anxiety drug called a benzodiazepine. Examples of other benzodiazepine drugs include Valium and Klonopin.

Benzodiazepine drugs work by increasing activity at receptors in your brain called GABA receptors. This has an effect of slowing down your nervous system, which can make you feel more relaxed and calm.

Xanax is similar to trazodone in that it may cause side effects such as feeling tired and drowsy. When this occurs during the day, it can affect your day-to-day activities.

However, unlike trazodone, Xanax and other benzodiazepine drugs can be addictive, even if youve been using them as directed. Because of this, they should only be used for short periods of time.

Treating Symptoms Of Dementia

Dementia causes a long progressive decline in cognition and overall functioning, and can be quite difficult to treat. Hence, other common symptoms of dementia such as insomnia and aggression are often treated instead .

Suicidal Thoughts Or Behavior

• Risk factors: Age 24 years or younger

Trazodone may raise the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Watch for worsening depression or any unusual changes in mood or behavior, especially during the first few months of treatment or when the dose changes. Report anything concerning to a provider right away. Trazodone isn’t approved for use in children younger than age 18.

How To Cope With Side Effects

What to do about:

• feeling sleepy or tired take trazodone in the evening and cut down the amount of alcohol you drink. If you take trazodone twice a day, talk to your doctor. Feeling sleepy should become less of a problem after a few days as your body gets used to the medicine. In the meantime, do not drive or use tools or machinery if you’re feeling this way.
• headaches make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol. Talk to your doctor if the headaches last longer than a week or are severe.
• feeling sick try taking trazodone with or after food to see if that helps. It’s best to avoid rich or spicy food while you’re taking this medicine.
• constipation eat more high-fibre foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables and cereals. Try to drink several glasses of water or another non-alcoholic liquid every day. If you can, it may also help to do some exercise. Watch a short video on how to treat constipation.
• a dry mouth chew sugar-free gum or sugar-free sweets.
