Does Trazodone Help With Anxiety

The Special Case Of Aggression

Does Trazodone help with anxiety?

Human-directed aggression is the most common canine behavior complaint fear or self-defense is the most frequent reason for aggression. Although clients may naturally assume that anti-anxiety medication can resolve this problem, remind themideally in a written documentthat there is no reliable cure for aggressive behavior, and no drug will prevent biting. More important than any medication is the need for clients to understand safety recommendations, avoidance of triggers of aggression, and the application of behavior modification, including both classical and operant conditioning. It should be emphasized that punishment or other harsh training methods, including shock collars and outdated dominance exercises, can backfire by increasing defensiveness and the likelihood of further biting. In any animal with a history of biting, the risk for future bites can never be entirely eliminated. Owners may not want to face the prospect of permanent caution, but nevertheless it is important to emphasize safety and preventive measures. When Is Trazodone Prescribed For Dogs

In veterinary medicine, Trazodone is considered if symptoms are so bad your pet is destroying property or having accidents in your home. This behavior needs to be treated right away before it gets even more out of control.

If your dog is exhibiting symptoms of anxiety caused by an imbalance of serotonin then there are two ways Trazodone is prescribed:

  • Long-Term Relief: Twice daily consumption of Trazodone to maintain a constant calm state. For example, giving a pill every morning If your dog suffers from anxiety when you go to work.
  • Short-Term Relief: Have Trazodone pills at the ready to administer before an anxiety attack can begin. For example, giving a pill before a trip to the vet, or before a loud thunderstorm begins.6
  • If your dog has been displaying one or more of the above symptoms during stressful situations, then Trazodone can make a huge difference.

While it is easy to think of our pets as completely different from us, we have more in common than you might think. Our brain chemistries are so similar that the same medication provides the same results. When taking care of an animal it is important to empathize and realize you may already have plenty of insight into what they need to start feeling better.

    When Is Trazodone Prescribed

The main objective of Trazodone administration is to minimize anxiety in short-term situations, as needed, or for generalized anxiety, administered daily. Its also used for keeping patients calm during vet visits or while confined after orthopedic surgery.

It can be given to pets who are afraid of thunderstorms or fireworks. Trazodone is also given for separation anxiety-based behavior disorder with behavior modification training and it can be combined with certain other medications at your vets discretion to help relieve anxiety-based behaviors.

Its best to give Trazodone before the trigger happens so that your dog is already calm when it begins to work. For example, if your dog is noise-averse and its 5 pm on July 4th, its a good time to start administering the Trazodone before the fireworks start instead of after the first boom.

Another example is before a vet visit: if your dog is usually fearful at the vet, a dose of Trazodone before you get ready to go will allow the medication to work in time for the car ride.

The time of onset and how long it lasts does vary from dog to dog, so it will be informative to do a practice test a day or two before a potentially fearful event, so you can optimize the timing. Trazodone is given every 8 hours and as needed based on the dogs weight and response.

What Should I Do If My Dog Took Too Much Trazodone

Some dogs are more sensitive to Trazodone, and even when given a very low dosage, they will become very sedated. Sometimes you may accidentally have given your dog too much. If this happens, it is best to contact your vet. Many times, they may tell you what other signs that you need to look out for, and the next dosage decreases the amount that you are giving your dog by half.

Usually, signs that your dog has gotten too much Trazodone will start to show after 30 to 60 minutes. The most common signs of toxicity include ataxia and lethargy. Usually giving your dog time will help.

When taken as directed, Trazodone will help you stay asleep for a full 7-9 hours of sleep.

Trazodone Risks You Should Know About

Trazodone isnt without risks, however. It appears to be more likely than other sleep drugs to leave you feeling drowsy the next day, which increases the chance of having an accident, particularly while driving or using heavy machinery.

It can also cause abnormally low blood pressure and, in turn, trigger dizziness or even fainting, particularly in seniors, which can increase the risk of falling. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that seniors with dementia who were given trazodone as a sleep aid were as likely to fall as seniors given antipsychotics, other drugs that can cause sedation.

Trazodone can also cause heart rhythm disorders. And some evidence suggests that it can cause priapism, or persistent erection, a medical emergency that may require surgery and can lead to impotence if not treated promptly.

And a black box warning in the package insert notes that trazodone, like other antidepressants, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children and adolescents, even when taken at approved doses for depression.

Is Trazodone Like Xanax For Anxiety

Is taking trazodone for anxiety similar to taking a medication like Xanax?

Xanax is actually a different type of drug than trazodone. Xanax is a type of anti-anxiety drug called a benzodiazepine. Examples of other benzodiazepine drugs include Valium and Klonopin.

Benzodiazepine drugs work by increasing activity at receptors in your brain called GABA receptors. This has an effect of slowing down your nervous system, which can make you feel more relaxed and calm.

Xanax is similar to trazodone in that it may cause side effects such as feeling tired and drowsy. When this occurs during the day, it can affect your day-to-day activities.

However, unlike trazodone, Xanax and other benzodiazepine drugs can be addictive, even if youve been using them as directed. Because of this, they should only be used for short periods of time.

As with any medication, taking trazodone can have some disadvantages.

    side effects of trazodone

    • feeling sleepy or tired, which can occur during the day
    • dizziness

In addition to common side effects, there are some potential health risks associated with taking trazodone.

Serious side effects from taking trazodone are rare, but they can include:

    potential risks of trazodone

    • an increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors, particularly in children and young adults
    • priapism, a painful, long-lasting erection
    • cardiac arrhythmias, which are heartbeats that can be faster than normal, slower than normal, or irregular

Additionally, a study in depression patients who were currently experiencing sexual dysfunction due to treatment with SSRIs reported that adding trazodone to their treatment caused these sexual side-effects to resolve, leading to a recovery of their normal sexual function .

I was taking 100 mg, since the 50 mg dose was not strong enough. It helped me fall asleep okay, but I did not stay asleep all night. I also was often “aware that I was sleeping,” which made me feel awake and left me tired in the mornings. It had a positive effect on my depression, but did not help my sleep enough to cause me to continue taking it.

Shock collars are a type of aversive training initially used in the 1960s to train hunting dogs.

The shock administered by an approved shock collar is safe, so while it is certainly enough to get your dog’s attention and deter certain behaviors, it won’t do any lasting physical harm.

Most dogs become destructive toward the squeaker and some dogs, like Henry, destroy the toy within seconds in order to “kill” the squeaker.

Allowing a dog to do this teaches them that it is okay to destroy whatever is making the squeaky noise this can lead to aggression toward small animals or children.

Lyme disease can cause a slower onset of signs such as arthritis, skin rash or kidney problems occasionally the chronic pain will cause aggression in infected animals.

There have been reported cases of dogs who are typically well mannered, now growling, lunging and attempting to bite.

If your dog or cat has been known to have a strong behavioral reaction to grooming or bathing, please advise us when making the appointment and when dropping off. If a pet is truly uncooperative or made uncomfortable by the process, we might end the session but we will never sedate your pet.

    Treating Symptoms Of Dementia

Dementia causes a long progressive decline in cognition and overall functioning, and can be quite difficult to treat. Hence, other common symptoms of dementia such as insomnia and aggression are often treated instead .

In one randomized controlled trial of 26 dementia patients, trazodone significantly decreased irritability, agitation, depressive symptoms, and eating disorders in 10 of the patients .

In another study, 18 out of 22 dementia patients with behavioral complications showed significant improvement with trazodone. The authors of this study concluded that trazodone may have potential as an alternative to other common medications, such as neuroleptics or benzodiazepines .
