What Are The Common Types Of Anxiety That Cause Symptoms

Anxiety is an umbrella term for a cluster of daunting feelings that can be difficult to cope with, like fear, worry, restlessness, and stress. Many people use anxiety to describe normal, everyday feelings of stress, but theyre still able to move on from the anxiousness without feeling totally consumed by it. Other times, though, anxiety is very overwhelming and can even become chronic, which is when we get into the territory of a diagnosable mental health condition.

There are various types of anxiety disorders that are characterized by their own unique symptoms. The common thread? They all can really disrupt a persons life. These generally include but are not limited to:

Remember how your sympathetic nervous system controls your heart rate? Research1 shows that when youre dealing with something stressful and your adrenal glands churn out hormones like adrenaline , receptors in your heart react by sending your heart rate into overdrive. That can be helpful in real emergencies: A faster heart rate enables you to pump more blood to your big muscles so you could theoretically flee or combat a threat, Dr. Gould explains. But if youre dealing with anxiety, that racing heart could just set off more feelings of anxiety, perpetuating a vicious cycle.

Oxygen is circulated around your body via your bloodstream. When your racing heart increases the rate at which your blood is circulating, your breathing might increase to provide you with more oxygen.

Again, that might be helpful if you need to outrun an actual threat. But breathing too fastwhich can lead to hyperventilation, or over-breathing to the point where you feel short of breathcan actually enhance a lot of the physical symptoms of anxiety on this list because it upsets the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders

We dont fully understand what causes anxiety disorders. But it is thought that the following factors can cause anxiety.

Genetics. Some people seem to be born more anxious than others. You may get anxiety through your genes.

Life experience. This could be bad experiences such as being abused or losing a loved one. It could also include big changes in life such as moving home, losing your job or pregnancy.

Drugs. Caffeine in coffee and alcohol can make you feel anxious. Illegal drugs, also known as street drugs can also have an effect.

Circumstances. Sometimes you know what is causing your anxiety. When the problem goes, so does your anxiety.

I Felt Sick All The Time And Then Realized It Was Actually Anxiety

During my senior year of college, my social life looked like this: I’d get a text from someone inviting me out for the nightit didn’t matter where: a party, a movie, a drink at a local barand I’d accept eagerly, being an obnoxious extrovert who welcomed any excuse not to study. But every time, an hour or two before we’d meet up, I’d suddenly start to feel sick. My skin would get clammy. I’d get the chills. I’d get nauseous and need to rush to the bathroom every ten minutes. Ultimately, I’d have to call and cancel. And within minutes of cancelling, I’d start to feel better again, every single time.

In hindsight, it’s obvious that I had some underlying issueI wasn’t just coincidentally getting a stomach bug every time I had to leave my apartment and then miraculously recovering. But at the time it took me nearly a year to figure out what was going on. It wasn’t until I was in a therapist’s office to seek treatment for my post-traumatic stress disorder that I realized these bouts of illness were actually just different facets of the same problemsevere anxiety.
