Tip : Practice Relaxation Techniques For Gad

Anxiety is more than just a feeling. Its the bodys physical fight or flight reaction to a perceived threat. Your heart pounds, you breathe faster, your muscles tense up, and you feel light-headed. When youre relaxed, the complete opposite happens. Your heart rate slows down, you breathe slower and more deeply, your muscles relax, and your blood pressure stabilizes. Since its impossible to be anxious and relaxed at the same time, strengthening your bodys relaxation response is a powerful anxiety-relieving tactic.

Effective relaxation techniques for relieving anxiety include:

Deep breathing. When youre anxious, you breathe faster. This hyperventilation causes symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, lightheadedness, and tingly hands and feet. These physical symptoms are frightening, leading to further anxiety and panic. But by breathing deeply from the diaphragm, you can reverse these symptoms and calm yourself down.

Progressive muscle relaxation can help you release muscle tension and take a time out from your worries. The technique involves systematically tensing and then releasing different muscle groups in your body. As your body relaxes, your mind will follow.

Medication is an option for long-term anxiety. But, they are not always an instant fix. Anti-anxiety medications, such as Ativan, Klonopin, or Xanax, can work quicklywithin minutes or hours. Antidepressant medications, sometimes used to treat anxiety, can take a few weeks to reach maximum effectiveness. As Heathman explains, Medication can take much longer to work as medication must be ingested, digested, absorbed, and then transferred in the bloodstream.

If youre experiencing anxiety for the first time or youre having an unexpected spike of anxiety, there are some techniques you can employ in the moment to help with your developing symptoms. Sudden onset anxiety is best controlled with relaxation techniques, Heathman says, which can work instantly after being employed. Some calming strategies include:

All of these techniques work by changing your brains focus, so that anxiety symptoms can pass. One of the keys to calming anxiety is also recognizing when and why it is happening. If you can sense that it is spiking, Saxena explains, then you can challenge yourself to use the same thought pattern to understand that it is a passing feeling.

How To Get Rid Of Anxiety Symptoms When You Dont Feel Anxious

If your symptoms are caused by any of the other factors we mentioned, such as recreational drugs or stimulants, addressing the specific cause should eliminate those symptoms.

Learning about anxious behavior and the many ways it can be created can alert you to anxious behavior you might not be aware of. Then, when symptoms appear, you can assess your behaviors to see if they are creating anxiety.

If your symptoms are being caused by hyperstimulation, eliminating hyperstimulation will eliminate its symptoms.

Keep in mind that it can take a long time to recover from hyperstimulation. In the meantime, youll likely continue to experience symptoms…and even though you arent feeling anxious at that moment.

As long as the body is hyperstimulated, even to a slight degree, it can produce symptoms of any type, number, intensity, duration, frequency, and at any time.

Reducing stress and resting the nervous system are the best ways to reduce and eventually eliminate hyperstimulation and its symptoms.

In many cases, youll also need to address your anxious behavior if you want to reduce your stress, since anxiety stresses the body. Unresolved anxiety issues are a primary cause of chronic stress .

Consequently, its difficult to eliminate hyperstimulation if your anxious behaviors are still creating stress.

These are just a few of the many reasons we can experience anxiety and anxiety-like symptoms when we dont feel anxious.

So, I completely understand this problem.

A Panic Attack In The World Of Alex

So this is where we get personal. I have panic attacks. I dont always know what sets them off. Things like being in an overcrowded mall will make me anxious, sure, but they wont toss me into an attack . Most of my attacks happen when I am safe at home and often times dont seem to have any stressor . One of the scary things about panic attacks is that you feel them coming on. This can actually lead to an attack, itself, which sucks. This is called anticipatory anxiety, anxiety related to the fear of having an attack.

I experience a number of the common symptoms of a panic attack, but not others. When I have a panic attack, I feel:

    • Extreme tension in my muscles
    • Shaking, due to the tension
    • Curling up in a tight little ball
    • Rapid breathing, which can lead to hyperventilation

Not fun. I am usually very cognitively with it when I have an attack, however. Normally, I am just upset with myself for being in this situation as if I have magical control over my bodys chemicals . I say things like, Come on Alex, this is ridiculous, , or Why cant I just get rid of the tension? Safety isnt the concern. I know that Im safe and that I have no reason to panic, but my body believes otherwise, and my body wins out over my rational mind. I dont feel that Im going to die, or that Im going to have a heart attack. No. I feel an utter loss of bodily control, with what appears to be a sound mind. How frustrating.

    • Cars, airplanes, subways, and other forms of travel.
    • Social gatherings, restaurants, or other situations where it would be embarrassing to have a panic attack.
