What Is The Link Between Smoking And Mental Health Conditions
Smoking is much more common among adults with mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, than in the general population.6 About 3 out of every 10 cigarettes smoked by adults in the United States are smoked by persons with mental health conditions.6 Why smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions is uncertain. More research is needed to determine this. No matter the cause smoking is not a treatment for depression or anxiety. Getting help for your depression and anxiety and quitting smoking is the best way to feel better.

Are Depression Medicines Effective
Yes. Because everyones unique, its difficult to tell in advance how a particular antidepressant medicine will work for you. Thats why its so important that we work with you to adjust your depression medicine if needed. Well typically recommend you start with an SSRI, and adjust your medicine and dosage based on how you respond.
As with any medicine, theres no guarantee that it will work for you.
Mindfulness And Applied Relaxation
Mindfulness and applied relaxation are alternative types of psychological treatment.
Mindfulness focuses your awareness on the present moment. It allows you to acknowledge and accept certain feelings. It can reduce anxiety associated with the fear of actual situations or sensations. It helps to counter the sense of ‘tunnel vision’ that may develop during anxiety.
Applied relaxation focuses on relaxing your muscles in a particular way. A trained therapist teaches the technique which alleviates anxiety and involves:
- learning how to relax your muscles
- relaxing your muscles quickly in response to a trigger
- practising relaxing your muscles in situations that make you anxious

Signs And Symptoms Of Anxiety
For people with anxiety disorders, the anxiety is often persistent and can get worse over time. The symptoms may interfere with their daily life.
Some of the most common signs and symptoms of anxiety include:
- Excessive fear and worry
If you experience these symptoms for six months or longer, you may have an anxiety disorder.
Treatment Considerations For Comorbid Anxiety And Depression
Resolving anxiety quickly should be the first goal of treatment in patients with anxiety and depression. Once this objective is accomplished, patients are much more likely to remain compliant with their antidepressant regimen and to continue their therapy for the full duration necessary to achieve complete remission of their depression.
One choice for pharmacotherapy in patients with comorbid anxiety and depression is the combination of a BZD or buspirone with an antidepressant. Alternatively, some patients may respond to antidepressant therapy alone, provided a drug that is effective in treating both disorders is used. Because the traditional anxiolytics will have little if any effect on depression, an adequate course of therapy with an antidepressant is imperative. On the other hand, in patients treated with an antidepressant plus an anxiolytic, the clinician may consider tapering the anxiolytic slowly, then discontinuing it when the symptoms of acute anxiety have resolved. Because of their well-documented withdrawal effects, the BZDs should be tapered gradually over the course of at least several weeks, depending on the dosage and duration of BZD therapy.

Choosing An Ssri Or Snri
Clinicians should choose a drug with a favourable tolerability profile and the least potential for drug interactions. Several antidepressants are potent inhibitors of cytochrome P450 enzymes.9 Combining more than one serotonergic drug, including multiple antidepressants, St John’s wort and some analgesics such as tramadol, can give rise to serotonin syndrome. A high index of suspicion is needed for patients who present with hypertension, hyperthermia, autonomic signs and hyperreflexia soon after starting, adding or increasing the dose of a serotonergic drug.10 Discontinuation syndrome is more common with some antidepressants such as venlafaxine and paroxetine.
Most patients with anxiety, and especially those with health concerns, for example in generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, are highly sensitive to the physiological effects of medication. Adverse effects commonly seen when commencing antidepressants, such as nausea, headache and dizziness, may be misinterpreted as signs of serious physical illness or impending loss of mental control. Hence, the increased anxiety often observed when starting SSRIs may reflect a combination of normal physiological effects, heightened cognitive symptoms of anxiety as a result of fears about the seriousness or permanence of these adverse effects, or more rarely, agitation or akathisia or acute suicidality.
Dose and duration
Can Antidepressants Cause Anxiety
Dr. Shelton says that SSRIs typically dont cause anxiety symptoms. However, if a patient is very anxious its a good idea to start on a very low dose to allow the patient to adjust to the medication slowly.
Dr. Plummer says that a patient starting an SSRI may notice an initial increase in anxiety. It takes a minimum of two to four weeks, sometimes longer, for SSRIs to reach the serotonin levels needed to relieve the depression or anxiety, she says.
Magnesium For Anxiety And Depression
There appears to be a correlation between suboptimal magnesium status among people with depression. A small association was found between low magnesium intake and depression among younger adults and other analyses have found that higher magnesium intakes are associated with lower risk for depression.
Thats telling, but we dont want to hang our hats on survey data from food intake questionnaires. Its not easy to get a solid picture of total body magnesium status, but when measurements are made , low blood magnesium or suboptimal status were found in nearly 40% of subjects in one study.
This doesnt mean that everyone with depression has low magnesium or that magnesium supplementation will always help, but inadequate magnesium seems to be more prevalent among people with depression than in those without it.
Okay, great. Plenty of possible mechanisms, and lots of folks with depression have low magnesium intake and/or blood levels. But what happens when the rubber hits the road?
Does increasing magnesium intake actually help with anxiety or depression?
A randomized controlled trial showed that in subjects starting off with low blood magnesium, magnesium supplementation normalized the magnesium level and reduced depressive symptoms more than placebo. The difference wasnt a landslide, but it was statistically significant, and the form of magnesium usedmagnesium oxideis less absorbable than others.
Lets tie this all together now.

Comorbid Anxiety And Depression
Although the interrelationship between anxiety states and depression has long been recognized in psychiatry, extensive exploration of the clinical significance of this relationship has begun only recently. Data are accumulating to suggest that these 2 conditions occur together even more frequently than they do as distinct clinical entities. Some investigators have concluded that these disorders may reflect a continuum of the clinical expression of a single disease. Because patients with chronic anxiety often develop depressive disorders over time, it also has been hypothesized that anxiety disorders actually may be, in some cases, a prodrome for depression. Contrasting data suggest that GAD, in particular, is an anxiety disorder that should be considered an independent entity, rather than as a prodrome, residual, or severity marker of depression. Nevertheless, the coexistence of anxiety and depression in the same patient negatively affects his or her clinical outcome substantially. Such patients typically have more severe manifestations of these illnesses and respond less robustly to treatment than do patients with either disorder alone. Fortunately, with the wide array of new antidepressants available today that can provide robust efficacy, these patients now have access to new agents that can treat both mood and anxiety disorders effectively.

Special Benzodiazepine Risk Factors
Anyone who takes benzodiazepines can experience unpleasant or dangerous side effects. But certain individuals are at a higher risk:
People over 65. Older adults are more sensitive to the sedating effects of benzodiazepines. Even small doses can cause confusion, amnesia, loss of balance, and cognitive impairment that looks like dementia. Benzodiazepine use in the elderly is associated with an increased risk of falls, broken hips and legs, and car accidents. Long-term benzodiazepine use also increases the risk of Alzheimers disease and dementia.
People with a history of substance abuse. Because theyre physically addicting and on their own and dangerous when combined with alcohol and other drugs, anyone with a current or former substance abuse problem should use benzodiazepines only with extreme caution.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Benzodiazepine use during pregnancy can lead to dependence in the developing baby, with withdrawal following birth. Benzodiazepines are also excreted in breast milk. Therefore, pregnant women need to have a thorough discussion about the risks and benefits of these medications with their prescribing doctor. If medication is necessary, the goal is the smallest effective dose.

Listen To Upbeat Music
There’s no doubt that music can have an impact on how you feel, so choosing the right music when you’re feeling down might be an effective way of lifting your mood.
Research has found people who are depressed may have a tendency to choose music that intensifies rumination, sadness, and emotion-focused coping. So while you might be tempted to turn to somber tearjerkers when you’re feeling down, consider listening to more upbeat songs to boost your mood and inspire positive feelings.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
This type of medication works by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain.
Examples of SSRIs you may be prescribed include:
- difficulty achieving orgasm during sex or masturbation
- in men, difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection
These side effects should improve over time, although some such as sexual problems can persist.
If your medication isn’t helping after about 2 months of treatment or it’s causing unpleasant side effects, your GP may prescribe an alternative SSRI.
When you and your GP decide it’s appropriate for you to stop taking your medication, you’ll normally have your dose slowly reduced over the course of a few weeks to reduce the risk of withdrawal effects.
Never stop taking your medication unless your GP specifically advises you to.
Multivitamin And Mineral Supplements
If you struggle with anxiety and depression, you may benefit from multiple supplements. A study in 2019 found the following nutrients help with anxiety.
- B vitamins
So, if you are looking for a holistic approach to anxiety, adding a multi-vitamin is beneficial. However, each brand of vitamins is different. For this reason, its best to ask your doctor about vitamins for depression and anxiety.
Gamma-aminobutyric is crucial for serotonin production. It is an amino acid and transmitter in your brain. Specifically, its known as the feel-good neurotransmitter. Because serotonin is the nervous systems most powerful neurotransmitter, GABA helps with mood regulation and relaxation. Although many vitamins help with anxiety, GABA taken directly reduces anxiety symptoms.
Passionflower is a herb commonly used to calm anxiety. It aids in promoting positive moods, ease nervousness, and improve sleep. Passionflower is typically added to teas. However, its available in tablet form.
Valerian root has been around since ancient Greek times. It has many different medicinal purposes. Although it mainly aids in sleep, it also helps reduce anxiety. Valerian root works by turning acids in the herb into feel-good neurotransmitters. As a result, it relaxes the mind and body and also regulates stress. You can consume Valarian root extract in capsule, liquid, or tea form.

Research Instruments And Analyses
Two focus group interview schedules were developed, one for employees and the other for organizational representatives. The schedule for employees covered: how anxiety/depression impacts on work whether medication affects work performance and compliance with medication. The schedule with organizational representatives covered: policies, practices and support offered to employees experiencing anxiety and depression. Both schedules were piloted and refined in the light of pilot studies . Each focus group discussion lasted for 90 min and was recorded on tape, with the agreement of participants. The recorded material was fully transcribed. The transcribed data were analysed by the sorting of verbatim material into emergent themes using the method described by Knodel. The reliability of the analysis was ensured through systematic review of the data by three members of the research team. The findings are summarized under themes along with illustrative quotes.
