This finding is in line with an earlier study showing that 50 mg/kg of paracetamol reduced mechanical allodynia in neuropathic rats, and with a recent study that used a diabetic mouse model and showed that paracetamol alleviated diabetic nociceptive pain in a dosedependent manner. It is known that paracetamol is potentially hepatotoxic especially when used in high doses. The finding of this study that a low dose of paracetamol that does not elevate hepatic enzymes in rats alleviated neuropathic pain without increasing anxietylike or anhedonic behavior may be relevant also for human medicine. In the future, the effects of higher paracetamol doses on pain and anxietylike behavior in neuropathic rats should be tested to investigate whether the anxiogeniclike and anhedonic behavior that was observed in healthy control rats after a high dose of paracetamol might also appear in neuropathic rats.

The University of British Columbia recently indicating that certain over-the-counter painkillers, like Tylenol, can be taken to relieve anxiety. The study, as explained by doctoral student and researcher Daniel Randles, discovered that Tylenol has the ability to help people deal with the stress and anxiety associated with existential dread, suggesting that anxiety about finding meaning in life and feeling physical pain may be rooted in the same part of the brain.
For instance, one part of the study, which consisted of 120 college students, involved dividing the students into two groups and giving one group of the Tylenol and the other a placebo. Each group watched the same video of Vancouver hockey fans rioting after a Canucks loss during their run to the Stanley Cup. The group that took Tylenol collectively believed that the rioters should have gotten easier punishments than what the placebo group reported.
But before running to your medicine cabinet anytime you experience tense feelings, this new study does not negate the fact that acetaminophen, the active chemical in Tylenol, has been strongly linked to liver failure, nor does it excuse Johnson & Johnson from its dirty business practices. Researchers have found that a gene, the mu-opioid receptor gene is responsible for the emotional aspect of physical pain. It may be this link that is responsible for acetaminophens ability to decrease social anxiety.
Two experiments looked at acetaminophens ability to decrease hurt feelings and social pain. Although there was no change in happiness, acetaminophen did alleviate hurt feelings and social pain.
That said, as stated initially acetaminophen is responsible for liver failure and hospitalizations, and thus speak to your doctor to find the correct dose before taking it.

Tylenol has long been used as a remedy for pains like headaches and stomach aches. However, researchers say that the painkiller may be able to serve as a potential remedy for a different kind of pain: anxiety about life. According to a recent study, it may stave off the psychological effects of anxiety over the human condition and death.
“Pain exists in many forms, including the distress that people feel when exposed to thoughts of existential uncertainty and death,” lead author Daniel Randles, from the University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychology, said in a statement. “Our study suggests these anxieties may be processed as ‘pain’ by the brain – but Tylenol seems to inhibit the signal telling the brain that something is wrong.”
The study was performed with participants who took either a placebo or acetaminophen, the generic version of Tylenol. First, the participants of the study performed tasks that were intended to evoke the type of existential anxiety that researchers wanted to study. Those tasks involved writing about death or watching a video directed by David Lynch, a director of movies like Mulholland Drive and creator of television shows like Twin Peaks, and is known for being dark and surreal. After having performed these tasks, the participants needed to levy fines for various hypothetical crimes, like public rioting and prostitution.
