Evidence-based research suggests that both anxiety and depression be treated at the same time.

Effective strategies often used in treating these co-occurring conditions include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT is often used to treat people with both disorders. Fears, anxieties and tendencies toward depression are managed by seeking out their root causes. Once uncovered, patients learn how to take control of their emotions and life.

% Of People Who Suffer From Anxiety Think Anxiety Never Goes Away

53 people took the initial poll. It wasnt many. But a huge 89% of participants replied to say anxiety never goes away.

I found the results shocking and saddening. Since gaining control of my anxiety, Id begun to see anxiety as temporary. Sometimes my anxiety would rise. But I knew itd always fall, too.

The idea that so many people had given up hope, hurt. And yet, the results were clear.

Most anxiety sufferers believed their anxiety would never go away.

All Anxiety Is Serious Anxiety

Although it is possible for some anxiety to be more severe for some than for others, in many ways all anxiety is considered severe because of its impact on various aspects of your life now and later on:

  • Quality of Life – Your quality of life is always important. Going through life with anxiety may mean experiencing less happiness because of its ability to interfere with your focus, sense of adventure, peace of mind, self-esteem, your projection of yourself in the world, etc.
  • Stress – Stress is different from anxiety in that it does not cause impairment of your ability to function in life. Nevertheless, long term stress can still result in deleterious effects on your organs, weakening your immune system, impairing memory, accelerating aging, etc.

Also, if left untreated, anxiety may only worsen. Whether you already suffer from severe anxiety or you experience daily anxiety that simply makes it more difficult to manage life, all anxiety is relevant and damaging.

Amongst those interested in meditation, the number jumped to 1 in 4 and the results were disparate enough to be statistically valid.

Katies Story: Recovering From Panic Attacks Anxiety And Depression

Does Anxiety EVER Go Away?

I am not a laid back person. I never have been. I worry and get stressed and can be quite negative sometimes. Last year, this started to get slowly worse.

It took a long time to notice it but I lost control of how stressed I was getting. I would randomly start crying in the taxi on the way to a party or struggle to answer the phone at work because I was terrified. I felt like I was losing my mind thoughts were racing constantly and I kept seeing images in my head of death.

Then one day at work I had my first SEVERE panic attack. Nothing happened, I was just at my desk replying to emails and then suddenly I felt myself losing it. It was like I just couldnt cope anymore with anything. I didnt know I was having a panic attack at the time all I remember is feeling like I was going die.

With encouragement from everyone I booked myself an appointment with the GP as well an appointment with the counselling service. I was taught different techniques and ways in which to cope with what was happening to me I learnt about mindfulness, breathing techniques, visualisation and the power of just ACCEPTING that youre experiencing anxiety and thats okay its going to go away eventually. It was really helpful.

Now, things are good. Not perfect! But thats never going to happen and I can accept and be okay with that.

Look after yourself and be patient, kind and non-judgemental to others.

Does Mindfulness Meditation Cure Anxiety

We cant be too quick to draw conclusions. My small experiment was limited.

For a start, I used Facebook data. That meant I had to rely on peoples claimed interests. Its impossible to say for sure that those interested in anxiety actually suffer from anxiety.

Its also impossible to say that those interested in mindfulness and meditation are practicing meditators.

But luckily, we dont need to rely on my experiment to answer the above question.

Independent research proves that mindfulness reduces anxiety.

If youd like to try meditating to reduce anxiety, you can get started today here.

Increase Social Situations Gradually

People with social anxiety disorder often avoid social situations where they may trigger their feelings of anxiety. Although this reduces anxiety in the short-term, avoidance can make anxiety much worse in the long-term.

If possible â and with the help of a therapist, if necessary â the person can gradually increase their exposure to the situations they fear. This creates space for them to have a positive experience with the situation.

Having positive social experiences can boost a personâs confidence and reduce their anxiety or reassure them that they can overcome it.

What Causes Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Does Anxiety Ever Go Away?

The exact cause of GAD is not fully understood, although it’s likely that a combination of several factors plays a role.

Research has suggested that these may include:

  • overactivity in areas of the brain involved in emotions and behaviour
  • an imbalance of the brain chemicals serotonin and noradrenaline, which are involved in the control and regulation of mood
  • the genes you inherit from your parents you’re estimated to be 5 times more likely to develop GAD if you have a close relative with the condition
  • having a history of stressful or traumatic experiences, such as domestic violence, child abuse or bullying
  • having a painful long-term health condition, such as arthritis
  • having a history of drug or alcohol misuse

But many people develop GAD for no apparent reason.

Things To Remember When You Think Your Anxiety Is Never Going To Go Away

It might feel like it’ll last forever, but it won’t.

When anxiety strikes, it can be all too easy to imagine it will never go away. The physical symptoms – a beating or palpitating heart along with a constant sick feeling in your stomach – plus a mind working in overdrive become so consuming that you can’t remember a time when you just felt normal.

The problem is, that fear of anxiety never leaving you – of never being able to feel like you again – can ultimately cause your bout of anxiety to be prolonged.

If you’ve found yourself in a thinking pattern like that, one way to help yourself out of the cycle is to logically and rationally remind yourself that this intense feeling of anxiety won’t last forever. It physically can’t.

Here are four other things the experts at mental health self-help app My Possible Self suggest remembering when you feel like this phase will never end:

1. Anxiety can be managed

“Cheer up”, “calm down”, “stop overthinking” if you suffer from anxiety, you may be tired of being told to essentially ‘wish away’ your fears. If only it were that simple. Although it takes more than willpower to banish anxiety, there are things we can do to manage it. This means finding the right techniques or treatment for you. What works for one person doesnt necessarily work for another, so it may mean doing a little research, speaking to your doctor and getting support from your friends and family. And if results arent immediate, dont lose heart it can take time.

Practice Mindfulness And Meditation

Being mindful means stepping back, tuning out the unimportant, and paying attention to whats happening in the moment. Mindfulness involves tuning into your surroundings and whats going on inside you.

Meditation is the practice of training your mind to redirect your thoughts and channel your focus and awareness.

There are many types of meditation, and all of them require some practice. Many resources are readily available to help you get started.

Consider downloading a meditation app or taking a meditation class to help you learn. The techniques you learn in meditation can come in handy when coping with a stressful situation.

Practicing meditation is associated with multiple health benefits, including improved sleep and lower stress.

Can Anxiety Go Away On It’s Own

I finally had the courage to go to see my doctor today…until I got outside the building. I sat outside for half an hour before giving up and walking away.

I see now that I am not going to be able to do it, I have tried.

How am I supposed to get the help that I need if I can’t even force myself through the door?

I’m too scared to sit there in front of my GP. And to anyone thinking that I am just being negative..yes, I am. That’s the problem I guess.

I have spent the rest of the day either crying, or staring blankly at nothing. I feel like I am just going to have to deal with it and be like this forever.

My partner tells me that going to the doctors is stupid anyway, because I am just very shy. I am pretty sure that it’s more than that, but if he’s not concerned then should I be??

Can anxiety go away on it’s own? Because the thought of feeling like this forever is just too much.

Why Does Anxiety Return Sometimes

Even if you find ways to manage your anxiety, certain situations can cause your feelings to re-emerge. Typically, these are situations that are generally stressful or cause you to feel low or tired. They include:

  • Financial issues
  • Fears of being alone
  • Fears about the return of your anxiety

It is normal for your anxiety and stress levels to fluctuate throughout your life depending on what youre going through and how you feel mentally. If you find your anxiety returning you should engage in behaviours that have helped you to manage it in the past or try a different strategy.

Why Anxiety Returns In Some Cases

Despite ones attempts to manage anxiety, it can return at any time for various reasons. If you are under a great deal of stress, dealing with an unexpected turn of events, or if you have a medical condition, your anxiety could come back. Even if nothing is happening at the moment, anxiety can return if a person creates things to worry about.

Certain medications can also trigger anxiety to return, including those that were prescribed to treat anxiety in the first place. This is called rebound anxiety, which can return if a person quits a drug abruptly or has trouble withdrawing from anti-anxiety medication, such as a benzodiazepine like Xanax or Klonopin .

Rebound anxiety is worse than the initial anxiety one receives treatment for. A person with this condition can experience insomnia, headaches, and other conditions. If you are experiencing rebound anxiety, rebound depression, or any other mental health condition that is affecting your ability to go about your daily life, consult with a medical professional who can look for long-term solutions.

What Else Reduces Anxiety

Intrusive Thoughts and Feelings With High Anxiety

Mindfulness meditation is far from the only tool we know of that can reduce anxiety.

As well as mindfulness, research suggests you can reduce anxiety through:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Applied relaxation
  • Prescription medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors

Different people seem to respond differently to anxiety treatments. The take home message, as I discovered personally after years of searching, is anxiety can go away. There are treatments available.

If youre suffering from anxiety, dont give up hope.
