Lorazepam (Ativan) for Anxiety and Panic Attacks | Benzo Tapering and Withdrawal

Some medicines interfere with the way lorazepam works and increase the chances of you having side effects.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before starting lorazepam if you take any of the following:

  • antidepressants and antipsychotics used to treat mental health problems
  • anticonvulsants used to treat epilepsy
  • hypnotics used to treat anxiety or sleep problems
  • drowsy or sedating antihistamines, such as chlorphenamine or promethazine

How To Use Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine is prescribed as an oral tablet or dissolvable tablet, and the dosage for both types is the same. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends using 15 milligrams a day to start, and that you should use it in the evening before going to bed.

The most effective dosage is between 15 mg and 45 mg per day. If a doctor approves it, you may increase the amount over a one to two week period. Some doctors may suggest you split the dose in two and take one-half twice daily.

Is It Ever Okay For An Older Adult To Take Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines, like all drugs and medical interventions, need to be considered by balancing their likely benefits with their burdens and harms.

There are some older patients often with severe chronic anxiety who seem to overall benefit from a low dose of these drugs.

Ideally, benzodiazepines should be used as a last resort, after making a serious attempt to treat insomnia and anxiety with non-drug approaches. These can include techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, regular exercise, and stress-reduction techniques. For people with dementia, providing caregivers with coaching on managing difficult behaviors can also help.

I do have some older patients who are on benzodiazepines. I dont like it, but usually weve tried other things, discussed the risks with the family, and concluded that this balance of benefits versus risks is acceptable. We also usually work to find the lowest possible dose.

How Should It Be Taken

Take Ativan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Benzodiazepines are usually taken only when needed, about 4 to 6 hours per day. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet . Swallow the pill whole. Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug release at one time. To make swallowing easier, you may open the extended-release tablet and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.

What Are The Effects Of Long

Ativan (Lorazepam): Uses, Side Effects, Abuse, Treatment

Long-term use of Ativan can increase your risk of certain side effects, especially physical and psychological dependence. This can lead to withdrawal symptoms when the medication is stopped.

Ativan is typically prescribed for short-term use of two to four weeks. If youre concerned that you might need to use this medication for longer periods, talk with your doctor.

When Ativan is dispensed from the pharmacy, the pharmacist will add an expiration date to the label on the bottle. This date is typically one year from the date the medication was dispensed.

The purpose of such expiration dates is to guarantee the effectiveness of the medication during this time.

The study showed that many medications may still be good beyond the expiration date listed on the bottle.

How long a medication remains good can depend on many factors, including how and where the medication is stored. Ativan should be stored at room temperature in its original container.

If you have unused medication that has gone past the expiration date, talk to your pharmacist to find out whether you might still be able to use it.

How Long Will Ativans Effects Last

How long does Ativan last? Once Ativan kicks in, it might last for six to eight hours again, it depends upon your body and your metabolism. Two hours is when you will feel the most benefit from Ativan after taking it. However, Ativan might last for as long as 72 hours, depending upon the dosage and the way it is administered.

One more thing you should remember is that the average half-life of the drug is about 12 hours. That means that whatever your dosage is, it takes 12 hours for that to decrease by half. As for the question âhow long it will stay in your bodyâ, you should know the therapeutic doses of Ativan are generally out of your body around 3 days after dosing. But, if you use large amount of it or use it frequently, it may be still detectable in your body for up to 6 weeks.

What To Ask Your Doctor

If youve been diagnosed with anxiety, your doctor may discuss lorazepam with you.

Several types of treatments can help manage anxiety. Your doctor may discuss lorazepam as one possibility to consider. But keep in mind, its only for temporary relief of anxiety. Ask your doctor about other options to manage your anxiety long term.

Its normal to have questions about your condition and its treatment options. Here are a few questions you might consider asking your doctor:

  • How long is it safe to take lorazepam?
  • Will my anxiety come back if I stop taking lorazepam?
  • Are there other treatment options available to manage anxiety that dont carry a risk of misuse, dependence, and addiction?

Combating The Side Effects Of Lorazepam

Is lorazepam helping to ease your anxiety so you can achieve a quality nights sleep, but also causing some unpleasant side effects? If youve finally found the best treatment for your insomnia and GAD, theres hope! Here are tips for treating the most common and relatively harmless side effects of lorazepam.

Why Its Important To Try To Stop Benzodiazepines

How I am Tapering off Lorazepam (Ativan) for Anxiety and Panic Attacks | Benzo Water Taper

Benzodiazepines are a commonly used type of tranquilizing medication. These drugs are usually prescribed for sleep, anxiety, or agitation.

However, benzodiazepines are much riskier than many older adults realize. For instance, research has found these drugs:

Because of these problems, in 2013 the American Geriatrics Societys Choosing Wisely list included benzodiazepines as one of the 5 Things Physicians and Patients Should Question, when it comes to healthcare for older adults.

But unfortunately, benzodiazepines are easily habit-forming, meaning that the body becomes dependent on them quite quickly.

So its important to offer an older adult the right approach, and a lot of support, when it comes to getting off these drugs.

I especially recommend avoiding benzodiazepines in people with memory concerns or a dementia such as Alzheimers disease. Benzodiazepines act on the same brain receptors as alcohol, and they almost always keep people with dementia from thinking at their best level.

Studies have also found that people who take benzodiazepines have an increased risk of developing dementia.

Does Ativan Use Affect The Digestive System

While Ativan generally has mild side effects on the digestive system while taking it, long-term use or withdrawal tell another story. Withdrawal from Ativan or other benzos can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other types of severe gastrointestinal upset. Often, people who are on long-term courses of drugs like Ativan can also develop symptoms that resemble irritable bowel syndrome and cause extreme discomfort. If this goes on long enough, it can result in damage to the digestive tract. However, it appears these symptoms will improve once withdrawal is complete.

Nevertheless, it is not safe to stop taking a short-acting benzo like Ativan without a doctors help. Doing so can lead to more severe withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures. For this reason, while quitting cold turkey might seem like the way to go to get past the digestive symptoms quickly, it is safer to follow a doctors recommendation for a slow, safe taper off the drug.
