Panic Disorder After The End Of Chronic Alcohol Abuse: A Report Of 2 Cases

Anxiety Hangover After Drinking? Why do I have so much anxiety the day after drinking?

Sir: Comorbidity rates between alcoholism and panic disorder vary widely in several clinical trials. Some trials reveal alcoholism rates in PD similar to those in the general population , and between 7% and 17% in agoraphobic patients, whereas other studies find higher rates ranging from 20.7% to 28%.

Some studies have suggested that individuals seeking treatment of alcohol use problems and dependence often meet diagnostic criteria for panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Other investigations have indicated that persons seeking treatment of panic-related problems often meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol problems. Otto et al., as one example, found that approximately 25% of persons seeking treatment for panic disorder had a history of alcohol dependence.

Panic attacks may be related to drinking aimed principally at reducing anxiety states and aversive bodily sensations. Yet such negative-affectreduction drinking may, over time, have paradoxically anxiogenic effects by promoting heavier drinking, somatic dysregulation , and greater degrees of withdrawal symptoms. To the extent that individuals with panic attacks continue to drink heavily to escape or avoid such aversive alcohol-related internal states, they may be more likely to progress beyond heavy use and abuse to develop tolerance and withdrawal-related problems associated with alcohol dependence.

Does Alcohol Cause Anxiety

Whats the relationship between alcohol & anxiety? Drinking alcohol interferes with your brains neurotransmitters. Again, alcohol triggers a release of feel-good hormones in the brain after a couple of drinks. But by the time youre sobering up, these chemicals are gone.

This means that the levels of stress-relieving and pain-reducing hormones in your brain may be lower when you sober up than they were when you started drinking. And this can happen just hours after youve had a few drinks.

Doctors often attribute anxiety after drinking to withdrawal from alcohol. If you experience mild anxiety after having a few too many, it may be attributable to a much milder version of severe withdrawal. More intense versions of the same symptoms are commonplace for heavy drinkers and binge drinkers experiencing physical withdrawal from alcohol.

Whats more, many people use alcohol as a way to self-medicate mental health conditions, like social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder , and depression.

And people with an alcohol use disorder are 2 3 times more likely to have anxiety. Unfortunately, using alcohol only worsens mental health issues in the long run.

Quick Rundown On Caffeine

Caffeine can be produced naturally or artificially. Naturally, it is derived from the seeds of several different plants. From there it is mixed into teas, coffees, sodas, and even foods. It gives people a burst of energy that is short-term. It is listed as a drug in all medical and psychiatric literature because it works on the central nervous system and can have dangerous side effects if used in high quantities. In its purest form, caffeine can be compared to cocaine.

If you abuse cocaine and decide to quit using cocaine, you will go through withdrawal and experience symptoms of anxiety, headache, sometimes upset stomach, bowel problems and body aches. Similar withdrawal effects happen when a person quits caffeine. These symptoms are part of the reason people do not quit using caffeine. The thought of having withdrawals can make people feel anxious and even have panic attacks. You can go one day but then you start to feel like crap and you know that one cup of coffee will help you feel better. So you end up giving in to the craving and take a drink of caffeine to avoid anxiety and any other discomfort. This is all too normal among caffeine users. Maybe if we knew more about the dangers of caffeine you would drink it less.

How To Avoid Feeling Anxious

Why Do I Have Anxiety After Drinking?

For some people, the best way to avoid the “hangxiety” may be to avoid alcohol altogether, or at least in large quantities, especially if you typically experience a lot of anxiety when youre not drinking, or have a history of panic disorder or panic attacks.

But at the same time, alcohols ability to reduce anxiety in the moment can be helpful in some situations, such as allowing someone with social anxiety to feel more comfortable socializing:

There are times that alcohol is effective in helping an anxious person feel more comfortable in social settings and uncomfortable situations, yet its not a solution to the cause of the underlying anxiety, says clinical psychologist Carla Marie Manly.

“Alcohol use is only a short-term remedy and doesnt address the underlying anxious process, Yusko says. Therefore, alcohol use becomes more necessary to feel better.

Over time, the use of alcohol can become a second problem, or serve as an avoidance behavior that actually maintains an anxiety disorder in the long term, Yusko adds. He doesnt believe all anxious people need to stay away from alcohol completely, but does recommend being careful about using alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety.

Clear Your Schedule If You Can

Do whatever you can to relieve yourself of high stakes activities for the day, suggested Fong. If you have something that isnt critical but takes up energy and calories, try to push that to later. But if you have something you absolutely have to go to, its better to do that sooner rather than later, he said. So many people plow through the day as a punishment for drinking, and thats the mindset that makes people more anxious. If you arent well, you arent going to do your job well, and worse, youre going to make yourself more anxious about meeting your obligations.

There’s A Physiological Reason You Might Feel Anxious After A Night Of Drinking

Although we dont tend to think of it this way, a hangover is basically a form of withdrawal from alcohol. What goes up must come downalcohol makes you feel goodand it tends to reduce tension. But when the alcohol wears off, the brain and the body have a rebound process, explains George Koob, PhD, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism . This one- to two- day withdrawal period is often coupled with the typical acute hangover symptoms , as well as anxiety and even depression in some cases.

This typically doesnt happen after one glass of pinot grigio, by the way this is more likely to be the case after a night of taking a few shots, or maybe finishing off a full bottle of wine. If you are a heavy drinker, over time, your central nervous system adjusts to having alcohol around all the time. Your body works hard to keep your brain in a more awake state, but when the alcohol level suddenly drops, your brain stays in this keyed-up state, says Sanam Hafeez, PsyD, a New York City-based licensed clinical neuropsychologist. Your brain continuing to be hyped up is what makes you feel the effects of anxiety, Hafeez points out.

The Social Repercussions Of Drinking

A significant contributing factor to an emotional hangover is concern about your behavior the night before. These fears can be augmented by a fuzzy memory. Our social interactions have a major impact on our mood and it has been proven that a strong social network is one of the strongest defenses against mental disorders like depression. Any perceived damage to this social network on your part as a result of intoxication is certainly a legitimate concern.

When we are younger, our prefrontal cortex which is responsible for reward-related mechanisms and stress regulation is not fully developed. As we mature and our prefrontal cortex fully develops, we are likely to experience stress and anxiety more heavily after a night of drinking.

Contrary to popular belief, drinking has negative effects on sleep.

How Long Does Alcohol

The length of alcohol-induced anxiety varies among each individual. One study in mice found that alcohol-induced anxiety that occurs from withdrawals can last 14-16 hours after initial hangover symptoms.21 abstract Another study in mice showed that binge drinking anxiety from alcohol withdrawals appeared to last 24 hours after initial hangover symptoms began.

If you are physically dependent on alcohol, you can experience anxiety symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal that last approximately 3-7 days, with the first 48 hours being the most difficult. Some people can experience anxiety symptoms that last longer than 7 days.22

How To Address Hangxiety

Now that weve discussed the why behind hangxiety, lets get to the how. How does one get rid of hangxiety? To get rid of hangxiety the most important thing to remember is that drinking more will not make it better. When experiencing increased anxiety after drinking, its beneficial to:

  • Hydrate to address the negative effects of dehydration
  • Increase endorphins by doing an activity like exercise, hiking, or walking
  • Combat stress and low serotonin by seeking calming activities such as meditation, deep breathing, art, or walking.
  • Rest. Alcohol negatively affects sleep and wake cycles, so getting adequate rest after drinking is very important
  • Take action to change your relationship with alcohol
  • As you continue on your journey, remember this: There is no shame in having used alcohol to cope with anxious feelings or to feel good. If youve felt anxious, embarrassed, worried, or regretful, know that so many others have too and you dont have to continue feeling this way. You deserve relief, and cutting back on alcohol can increase self-esteem, provide a clearer sense of self, and reduce overall anxiety. Alcohol Is A Depressant

One of the times when alcohols impact on mental health is the most obvious is the morning after drinking, especially if you have drunk too much the previous day, whether that has been over a long or short period.

Why is this? Alcohol is a depressant which affects your brains natural level of happiness chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. This means that although youll feel an initial boost the night before, the next day you will be deficient in these same chemicals, which may lead to feeling anxious, down or depressed.

    Anticipation Can Lead To Anxiety

Why Do I Get Depressed After Drinking?

When you are wanting a drink having that drink relieves the craving and desire. that by its nature feels good. The act of anticipation simply looking forward to something creates expectation which is a huge part of actual pleasure. Once that is over if you have a rule about when you will drink again you have a period of time of sobriety to get through before you get to do it again. That waiting period can be a huge source of anxiety after drinking.

    Alcohol Abuse And Dependency

Alcohol abuse refers to drinking too often and in large quantities, whereas alcohol dependency involves the inability to quit drinking, loss of control, and withdrawal. Alcohol dependence is considered alcoholism and is characterized by the need to drink or the craving to drink. Dependency can lead to the following:

    • adverse health effects
    • financial issues
    • damaged relationships

    How To Reduce Hangxiety

If you’re experiencing alcohol-induced anxiety due to withdrawal from alcohol then it’s wise to check in with a medical professional. They might suggest medication like a sedative to help with this temporary surge in anxiety and may be able to suggest other resources for recovering from AUD.

Even if you dont have an alcohol use disorder, you can still experience hangxiety after a night of heavy drinking. If you wake up feeling gripped by anxiety, keep in mind that it might be because of the way your body and brain are processing the alcohol. If you can, rest and allow your brain to recover, advises Dr. Bogenschutz. Some people claim that drinking more alcohol helps cure hangovers, but that can only make things worse. Avoid the temptation to drink alcohol, because that can become a vicious cycle and lead to more severe problems including addiction and more serious withdrawal symptoms, says Dr. Bogenschutz.

    Does Everyone Experience Hangxiety

Although hangxiety is common enough to have its own term, it is not universal. Its certainly possible to have a hangover that is not accompanied by hangover anxiety. Hangxiety can happen to anyone, but its most prevalent among people who have depression or anxiety, as well as those who are highly shy6.

Individuals with anxiety often experience temporary relief of their symptoms when drinking, which can feel liberating. These same individuals, however, often experience much worse feelings of anxiety once the effect wears off. In contrast to the effects of alcohol, these feelings can be especially overpowering and can lead to a cycle of self-medication.

Studies7 show that people who experience shyness and anxiety may be at greater risk for developing alcohol use disorder . Their dependence can often be more severe than that of alcoholics who do not have anxiety. They are also more likely to relapse, and may experience more withdrawal symptoms.
