  • Joshua : 9 This Is My Command

In this scripture, God tells us to do something that he mentions 365 times in the bible and that is to fear not. It is not a coincidence that we are told over and over and 300 times over not to fear. Im sure God knew we would need to hear that time and time again because fear will come. This scripture is a reminder when you become afraid and that fear leads to worry and anxiety to do it anyway. To be courageous and strong and to go forth anyway. That is how you overcome fear and anxiety and worry. By moving forward day by day. You beat it by having the thought and feeling the feeling, rationalizing it, and pushing through with Gods word in tow. Being strong and courageous doesnt mean youre never scared, it doesnt mean youre this person who isnt bothered by anything, and it doesnt mean you dont have a tough or bad day. Being strong and courageous and even fearless means despite all of that you dont quit, you keep working toward your goals, you continue to put yourself out there, you keep reminding yourself of Gods word. Take those deep breaths, because taking deep breaths are essential when you deal with anxiety. You do whatever it is that must be done in order for you to be great. And the more and more you do it, the less and less you will be anxious because your life will become an example of God being with you and you can use your past successes as a reminder of how great you really are.

What Does The Bible Say About Anxiety Specifically

Although some people experienced anxiety in the Bible, Christians should know what Scripture says about anxiety in general. Christians can quote the verse from Philippians to reassure each other about Gods control, but what else does the Bible have to say?

First, one can take a look at some of the examples above to see how those people confronted their anxiety.

For instance, whenever David cried out to God in anguish, at the end of the Psalm he acknowledges Gods power and plan . This might indicate Christians should place their trust in God, even when anxious thoughts and worries can cause them to feel the opposite way.

In addition to how biblical examples deal with anxious thoughts, Christians can look to the following verses for guidance when it comes to anxiety:

As for Christians who do not currently deal with anxiety, what should they do? Scripture encourages us to bear one anothers burdens . When a fellow brother or sister struggles with fears of what the future may hold, Christians should walk alongside them and provide comfort and peace during volatile moments in life.

Anxiety In The Bible Theme : Anxiety Can Be A Signal Of Personal Sin

What Does The Bible Say About…Fear, Anxiety, and Worry? – Ep. 3: WTBS | Impact Video Ministries

The Bible is clear that anxiety CAN come as a result of sinfulness, although this is not always the case. When sin is cherished, when we are deliberate about disobeying God, we may experience emotional crisis.

You may remember in the book of Deuteronomy when the children of Israel made a covenant to serve God. Chapter 28 lists the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience. Verses 65-67 says,

The Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul. Your life shall hang in doubt before you you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life. In the morning you shall say, Oh, that it were evening! And at evening you shall say, Oh, that it were morning! because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and because of the sight which your eyes see.

Yes,sometimes anxiety and emotional distress can come as a result of sin. If a guy tells me hes having an affair but his wife hasnt found out yet and hes falling apart from anxiety, well, hello cause and effect.

Again, the main ingredient of anxiety is uncertainty, and when we are living in sin we have a constant sense of uncertainty about:

    • if well be caught
    • when well be caught
    • what the consequences will be
    • what people will think when they find out
    • how God will respond to our choices

The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked.

    Philippians 4:6-7
