Can Birth Control Help With Depression And Anxiety

How Hormonal Birth Control Works

Can switching birth control cause anxiety?

Birth control pills that use estrogen and progestin will affect your bodyâs hormones. Your body makes estrogen, while progestin is a man-made version of the hormone progesterone, which your body makes as well.

To keep your body from an actual pregnancy, these pills copy what your body would do if you were pregnant. When you conceive, your body releases different levels of estrogen and progesterone. This happens in a similar way when you give your body these hormones through the birth control pill.

Estrogen and progestin will stop or slow down ovulation . Theyâll also make the mucus in your cervix thicker to stop sperm, and cause the lining of your uterus to thin so your egg is less likely to implant. All of these things will help to keep you from an unplanned pregnancy.

What Happens When You Stop Taking Birth Control

When you go off hormonal birth control, you might feel or notice some changes in your body but those arent side effects as we typically think of them. Rather, your body and reproductive system are transitioning back to their pre-birth control state.

Dr. Jane van Dis, MD, FACOG, OB-GYN and member of our medical advisory board, explains: If youre going off birth control, expect that some of those experiences and side effects you had before you went on will come back. Some of these changes like weight gain or weight loss while on birth control can especially affect your menstrual cycle after stopping.

The post-BC changes youll experience vary from person to person, but heres some of what you might expect after stopping birth control:

1.The adjustment period: For most people who quit taking birth control with estrogen and progestin , your ovaries and menstrual cycle will return to normal within 90 days whatever that looked like for you before starting birth control.

The length of time youve spent on birth control will not affect this 90-day time frame, Dr. van Dis explains, since most of the medications clear from your system in 48 hours.

5. Mood swings and depression: Since birth control pills can be associated with changes in mood for some people, stopping BC can result in mood swings, and increased or decreased feelings of depression.

How Can Birth Control Help With Pmdd Symptoms

While birth control is typically perceived as only being used for pregnancy prevention, it has numerous health benefits, such as alleviating symptoms of PMS and PMDD. Those that contain a combination of hormones estrogen and progestin are typically recommended for individuals with PMDD.

More specifically, birth control pills that contain ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone are the most helpful for alleviating symptoms in PMDD sufferers. Popular brands that contain this unique combination of hormones include Yaz, Ocella, and Beyaz. However, only Yaz is FDA-approved for treating PMDD, as it has been found to increase the quality of life and day-to-day functioning in individuals who typically suffer from the disorder. Other birth control options that can help treat PMDD include the following:

  • Combination pills that contain both Ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel taken continuously
  • Contraceptive patches and rings

Is There A Link Between Birth Control Pills And Depression

Depression and mood swings are commonly reported side effects of birth control pills. Researchers have been unable to prove or disprove a link. The research is often conflicting.

A pilot study showed that depression is the most common reason women stop using birth control pills. It also found women using combination birth control pills were significantly more depressed than a similar group of women not taking the pills.

By contrast, a more recent study published in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics concluded that depression isnt a common side effect of birth control pills. This study maintained that the link between the two is unclear.

Signs of Depression

Despite the lack of a definite link, many women report feeling depressed while taking birth control pills. According to the AGO study, this may be due to the inconsistent use of the word depression. This could also be due to variance in pill formulations

The perceived connection may also be due to a large number of women with depression. Approximately 12 million women in the United States experience clinical depression each year. Although exact numbers cant be confirmed, its likely that many of those women take birth control pills. In some cases, the timing of depression may be a coincidence.

What Is The Best Contraceptive Pill For Me

Oral Contraceptives Cause Low Vitamin B6 And Zinc Reduce

Contraceptive pills are tablets taken daily to prevent pregnancy. Taken correctly, they are up to 99% effective. But, because of things like missing a pill, or having diarrhoea or vomiting , on average the pill is actually about 91% effective.

There are two different types of pills available: the combined pill and the mini pill. For both types, there are many different brands available. All the different pills are almost just as effective at preventing pregnancy if taken correctly. But, some types are more suitable if you have certain health conditions or need a longer timeframe in which to take them each day.

Your doctor or pharmacist will make sure it is safe for you to take the pill before prescribing it. As different brands use different combinations of hormones, you may find that one brand works better for you than others. Working out which pill suits you best can be trial and error, based on what benefits you want to get out of the pill and the side effects you might have. We can give you pointers to help you discuss with your doctor where to start.

Most contraceptive pills need a prescription from a doctor, but two mini pills are available over the counter following an assessment by a pharmacist, and can be bought online conveniently with Superdrug Online Doctor.

A Strong Study On Hormonal Birth Control And Depression

However, another does meet the criteria to qualify as high-quality, and therefore believable. The study of over a million Danish women over age 14, using hard data like diagnosis codes and prescription records, strongly suggests that there is an increased risk of depression associated with all types of hormonal contraception.

The authors took advantage of Denmarks awesome nationalized information collection systems, including diagnosis and prescribing data. These exist because the country has had a well-run and organized national health system for decades. They have reams of data on every single person in Denmark going back to the 1970s. Additional available information used in this study included education level, body mass index, and smoking habits. All of this was de-identified to protect the individuals involved, so there was no potential violation of privacy.* Surprising connections between hormonal birth control and depression emerged.

This study looked at women aged 15 to 34 between 2000 and 2013, and excluded those with preexisting psychiatric conditions, as well as those who could not be prescribed hormones due to medical issues like blood clots, and those who would be prescribed these medications for other reasons. They also excluded women during pregnancy and for six months after pregnancy, and recent immigrants. This way they wouldnt accidentally include women with an unrecorded history of any of these conditions.

Your body produces stress hormones in response to a threat or fear, These steroid hormones help you cope and prepare for action. If there is nothing to act on, you are left feeling anxious. Birth Control and Depression: The Link Between the Pill and Depression

I think she gave me Dianette just because I have PCOS rather than to alleviate any specific symptoms. I never really felt anything but could not stop crying. Colleagues got used to me crying at my desk and stopped asking me what was wrong.

The pill has always been prescribed to me as a catch-all for hormonal dysfunction and gynae issues.

The pain and misery endocrine disorders can cause is often minimised and people accessing care are treated as hysterical women exaggerating pain or discomfort, often regardless of whether theyre women, non-binary people or trans men.

Its so frustrating that the gynaecologists Ive had arent able to really talk seriously about mental health I feel like I cant trust their advice.

Avoiding Unintended Pregnancies Which Trigger More Depression

The mental and physical stress of an unintended pregnancy could trigger a new and recurrent bout of depression, including postpartum depression, Wisner added.

Women should know they always have access to many types of birth control, regardless of their history or likelihood of mental illness, Wisner said. They shouldnt feel like theyre out there flailing on how to not get pregnant.

The highest prevalence of mental illness is in women in their prime reproductive years , yet psychiatrists dont typically receive enough training in contraceptive management to properly counsel these women on the choices of birth control for them, the authors said. The study authors hope the findings will lead to better collaboration between gynecologists and psychiatrists, so they can work together to help women decide what contraceptive is best for them.

Psychiatrists should feel well versed and comfortable talking with patients about their goals for fertility, pregnancy planning and starting a family down the road, Kiley said. The default should not be, I just told her to use condoms. It should be that there are a lot of safe and effective options out there. We should also develop better communication systems between psychiatrists and gynecologists, who care for the same patients.

Contraceptive care should be viewed as preventative health, so women can make active and deliberate decisions about timing of pregnancies. Its a novel concept to some, though.

What Is The Best Medication For Treating Pmdd

In terms of medication, a doctor may prescribe birth control pills and/or an SSRI to treat PMDD. Birth control can help balance hormones and, thus, decrease the intensity of pre-period symptoms. If birth control alone does not help improve the individuals quality of life, their doctor may prescribe a type of antidepressant referred to as an SSRI. This medication helps release serotonin , and in turn, improve negative emotions associated with PMDD.

Although the aforementioned types of treatment may be effective for some individuals, others may require a different approach. Furthermore, it is crucial to consult a doctor in order to determine the best treatment plan for your specific needs.
