Does Meclizine Help With Anxiety

Rated For Nausea/vomiting Report

Does alcohol help with anxiety and stress?

I first took meclizine for nausea due to being car sick. I get very sick just being in a car for longer than an hour. Living in the city, it’s very hard to cope with because everytime I go anywhere, I’m in the car longer than an hour! I got Dramamine less drowsy which has meclizine and it WORKS WONDERS! And to top it, I have anxiety. So when I feel nauseous due to anxiety, I take it and it works great. My mom took it when she had a stomach virus and it kept her from vomitting. I highly recommend meclizine! So glad it’s OTC now!

Can You Get High On Dimenhydrinate Dramamine

Dramamine is a brand name for the drug dimenhydrinate. It is an over-the-counter antihistamine that is typically used for relief from nausea and vomiting. Dimenhydrinate is commonly used for those who are sensitive to motion sickness during travel, such as those who become ill from travel in planes or cars. Products containing dimenhydrinate are also used as sleep aids in other over-the-counter medications.

Dramamine is available in a tablet, liquid, or chewable tablet form. The drug is considered safe when used as directed, but it is not without risks. Side effects of Dramamine include:

  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased mucus

Some people are allergic to the drug and could experience a rash, difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the mouth, or chest tightening in reaction to taking the drug. Drinking alcohol in conjunction with Dramamine could increase the risk for experiencing negative side effects.

What Breeds Are Prone To Anxiety

Dog anxiety is not unique to any particular breed, but there may be some breeds that are more prone to it. Any dog can develop anxiety, says Dr. Burch, who adds that dogs who are highly active, and/or working dogs that do not have a job may be particularly prone to developing anxiety. Examples of breeds that could fit into these categories include:

  • German shepherd
  • Vizsla
  • Border collie

Dogs of any breed can experience anxiety. As Bernal points out, A study conducted in Finland analyzing 264 breeds found that pet parents thought more than 70% displayed some form of anxiety. With anxiety being such a common issue for dogs, a multifaceted approach to treat it may be best.

Of course, not everyone who deals with flight-related anxiety feels comfortable using medications or supplements to ease their discomfort. In many cases, meditative visualization can prove highly effective in calming your psyche and keeping your in-flight thoughts from veering toward the negative side.

Travis McNulty, a licensed mental health counselor practicing in St. Petersburg, Florida, recommends the following visualization regimen for anxious flyers:

“The night before your flight, visualize how the day will go before your flight. Be as detailed as possible in your imagining picture how you’ll get there, think of what you’ll see on the way to the airport, imagine what you’ll hear at your terminal, will you get a bite to eat before? It’s important to get as detailed as possible. During this imagination breathing through your nose for a 3-count and exhaling at a 5-count will put your nervous system at a state of relaxation.

It’s important to add the breathing with the visualization because while you’re not actually experiencing the exact experience the day of your journey, you’re conditioning your brain to think that it’s already done this. It’s important to go from beginning to the end of the flight as well. I segment the breathing and imagery for my clients in three separate parts:

  • On your way to the airport and the experience of takeoff.
  • The flight itself including times of turbulence.
  • Landing and arriving at your final destination.”

    Lets Talk About Meclizine

Lets spend a few weeks talking about meclizine. Most patients complaining of dizziness or vertigo have been given a prescription for meclizine at some point. For a medication that is so widely used, there is very little solid information or recent research to back this up.

Meclizine goes by a few names meclizine is the generic term, but it is also packaged under the names Antivert, Bonine, and Dramamine II. The original Dramamine is a similar medication called Dimenhydrinate. Dramamine II is marketed as the less drowsy formula, although I am unaware of any studies to substantiate that claim. In fact one study showed that dimenhydrinate caused drowsiness for a shorter period of time than did meclizine.

So many patients come in to our balance clinic having received a prescription for meclizine, I am in the habit of asking them about perceived benefit. After listening to their symptoms , I ask them What is it that the meclizine is treating? The most common answer is the dizziness. Most do not have a clear understanding of the purpose or potential benefit or negative effects of taking meclizine.

What Other Drugs Will Affect Meclizine

Taking meclizine with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can increase these effects. Ask your doctor before taking meclizine with a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.

Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, and those you start or stop using during your treatment with this medicine, especially:

    • cinacalcet

    • terbinafine or

    • the antidepressants bupropion, duloxetine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, or sertraline.

Other drugs may interact with meclizine, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medicines you use now, and any medicine you start or stop using.

I take Xanax on an as-needed basis paired with a daily SSRI. I take it about once a week for situations where I can feel my panic getting out of control. I take 0.5 mg and it is enough to relax me and slow down my heart rate, without feeling totally sedating. I have terrible motion sickness, so a pharmacist recommended this. The bottle says to take 1-2 tablets an hour before needing it. I took 2 since I knew we were going to have a turbulent flight. I slept the 2 hours on the flight – I was happy with that! Today I took one before my first flight, and am hesitant to take a second I am hoping the 25 mg will continue several hours later since I had a long layover. I dont care if it knocks me out – -I wont be driving and I didnt get sick on the flights!
