Typical Treatments For Anxiety Disorders

Treatments for anxiety disorders often take a multidisciplinary approach. The two primary types of anxiety treatment are:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy : This is also known as talk therapy, and it involves regular sessions with a licensed therapist where you talk about your feelings and behaviors. CBT focuses on addressing your negative and false beliefs and finding ways to manage them. For example, an anxiety patient might talk about their fears and worries to work towards rethinking them.
  • Medication: Doctors may also prescribe medication to reduce your anxiety symptoms. If you only have issues with anxiety, they will prescribe anti-anxiety medication. But if you also have depression, some antidepressants also help anxiety.

In addition to your medical treatments, you can use self-management strategies to address your anxiety further. Your therapist can teach you some coping strategies during your sessions. In-person support groups or legitimate online resources can teach you more.

Some patients also try alternative and supplemental treatments like exercise and yoga. If you have the ability to do these kinds of physical activities, they will certainly improve your overall health and may offer some relief from your anxiety disorder, as well.

  • The Endocannabinoid System And Anxiety

The modulation of the endocannabinoid system through the ingestion of medical marijuana influences a range of functions in the body, including those associated with anxiety.

Endocannabinoids are lipids produced naturally by the body and act as a neurotransmitter. These lipids activate CB1 and CB2 receptors in areas of the brain known to affect behavioral and emotional reactions, learning, memory, homeostasis and decision making.

Researchers have previously examined the role of CB1 receptors and discovered they play a key role in anxiety. They found deficiencies in natural cannabinoids result in an increased risk for the development of post-traumatic stress syndrome and depression. Supplementing this signaling system with low-doses of tetrahydrocannabinol one of the active compounds in medical marijuana helped to reduced symptoms of anxiety and increase patients resilience to stress .

Qualifying Conditions In Arizona With Symptoms Of Anxiety

Medical marijuana provides benefits for many different anxiety-related conditions. So, while anxiety may not be listed as one of the qualifying conditions for receiving an Arizona medical card, if your anxiety occurs as the consequence of any of these conditions or their treatment, you can still qualify for that card:

    • Alzheimers disease agitation
    • HIV-positive status

Whats more, Arizona issues medical marijuana cards to patients with any medical condition that has certain symptoms, namely:

    • Persistent or severe muscle spasms, such as those associated with multiple sclerosis
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Wasting syndrome

Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms as a result of any other medical condition, you can still qualify for a medical card in Arizona as well.

Finally, note that Arizona is still adding new conditions to its list of those that qualify for legal medical marijuana in the state. Every year, you can petition the Arizona Department of Health Services to add a new qualifying condition like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder or Panic Attacks to the list.

Best Medical Marijuana Strains For Depression And Anxiety Disorders

Some patients might decide to go the medical marijuana card route, perhaps because of another qualifying condition or because the patient lives in a state where anxiety and depression are qualifying conditions. If this is the case, then products that are low in THC and high in CBD are a better choice.

Below are a few of the more popular cannabis strains that are high in CBD and low in THC.

Although anxiety and depression patients cant yet purchase these strains in Pennsylvania, there are many states where marijuana is legal for adults 21 and older. If one were to find oneself in one of these states these would be better options for anxiety and depression patients than strains that are high in THC.

And for those who can tolerate higher levels of THC, here are some cannabis strains that offer a balance of CBD and THC.

    • Stephen Hawking Kush

Not every medical marijuana dispensary carries these particular strains. However, a qualified budtender will be able to point you in the direction of other strains with similar CBD to THC ratios.

Another option would be to buy both CBD-rich hemp flower and marijuana thats high in THC and just mix a little marijuana into the hemp flower. This gives you a high-CBD, low-THC mix at a lower price than if you were to purchase something like ACDC at 20:1 CBD.

How Does Medical Marijuana Help Treat Anxiety

    Medical Records Request Service

Anxiety disorders are easily treated. However, sadly, only about one-third of patients seek medical treatment.

Scientists believe that cannabinoids produced in marijuana such as THC and CBD act through various receptor-independent channels.

For example, CBD to some extent mimics the effects of one of our own naturally produced cannabinoids called anandamide. Anandamide is responsible for the production and uptake of the hormone serotonin. Anxiety patients often exhibit reduced levels of serotonin. Boosting those levels can calm anxiety in some patients.

Another common cannabinoid found in marijuana, THC, has the ability to induce feelings of euphoria which can go a long way toward helping to reduce feelings of anxiety.

However, in some patients, high doses of THC can result in feelings of anxiety paranoia. Medical marijuana patients need to be careful to not overmedicate.

Ideally, for treating anxiety disorders, a balance of THC and CBD is recommended.

Moreover, some strains of medical marijuana contain compounds called terpenes which have been shown to be useful in inducing feelings of relaxation.
