Are Panic Attacks Dangerous
You wont die from a panic attack. But you might feel like youre dying when youre having one. Thats because many panic attack symptoms, like chest pain, are similar to those experienced with serious medical conditions like a heart attack.
Sometimes, you might not be able to tell the difference between the symptoms of a panic attack and another condition. In those situations, you should seek immediate medical attention. However, knowing your panic attack triggers and any medical conditions that you might have can help you distinguish a panic attack from an acute medical problem.
Some medical conditions are more common in people who have panic attacks than in people who dont. One reason for this is that panic attacks and certain medical conditions share risk factors. For example, exposure to a stressful life event is a risk factor for developing panic attacks and certain heart conditions.
Here are some medical conditions common in people who have panic attacks:
For most people, one or two panic attacks at some point in your life wont cause long-term issues. But repeated panic attacks can contribute to physical problems such as sleep disturbances or heart conditions.
How Can You Get Help If Youre Having Repeated Panic Attacks
If you are having repeated panic attacks, tell a healthcare provider or a mental health professional. Unfortunately, many people dont tell their provider about their attacks and suffer needlessly. There are treatments that can help you feel better.
If you dont have a psychiatrist or therapist, a healthcare provider might recommend that you see one. A therapist will talk with you about your symptoms to help you better understand and manage them.
Common therapies for panic attacks include cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. In cognitive behavioral therapy, a therapist will help you manage your anxiety by slowly confronting your triggers in a safe and supportive setting. In supportive and psychodynamic therapies, you might explore the sources of your stress or triggers and identify better ways of coping.
If your symptoms are severe, your provider might also recommend that you try an anti-anxiety medication. Examples include , , and . These medications help by decreasing both the physical sensations and emotional reactions you experience during a panic attack. Some people take an anti-anxiety medication and participate in therapy.
If you are already seeing a provider for a mental health disorder or medical condition, dont assume that they know about your panic attacks. Panic attacks often go undetected even if you have a condition that they are commonly seen with. Talk to your healthcare provider about all of your symptoms.

Gradually Face Your Fears
Avoidance feeds into fear, making it grow bigger and stronger. The more you avoid situations that scare you, the less confident you become in your ability to face and overcome your fear. One of the fastest and most effective ways to overcome a fear is to repeatedly face it, which desensitizes you to it, giving it less power over you.
Panic Attacks Aren’t Deadly But They Should Be Treated
Even though panic attacks are not dangerous, they will always feel dangerous. Remember, the feeling of doom and concerns about your health are not just due to the physical symptoms – they’re also symptoms of panic attacks. Even if you had no physical symptoms you’d still feel that feeling of impending doom because that’s a symptom of this type of anxiety.
So no matter how many times you’re told that your health is fine and that you’re just experiencing panic attacks, you need to remember that until you cure your panic attacks you’re going to have a hard time believing it. Going to the doctor helps, but the reality is that most people with panic attacks still worry that the doctor missed something, or that the panic attacks are going to cause their heart to explode, simply because the panic attack itself causes that feeling as a symptom.

Death Anxiety And Covid
Millions of people around the world have died from COVID-19 during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With constant reminders of death and disease overshadowing nearly every aspect of life during the pandemic, overall feelings of death anxiety have increased a great deal. Those who fear that they are more prone to contracting and dying from COVID-19 have higher levels of death anxiety and are more susceptible to general psychological disturbances such as depression, anxiety, stress, and paranoia. Elderly individuals, who were already likely to experience death anxiety outside of a pandemic situation, now find their fear of death largely exacerbated. The fear of dying from COVID-19 has also been one of the leading factors in psychological distress among general populations during the course of the pandemic. Studies have found that anxiety brought on by COVID-19 not only leads to the general fear of death, but also to xenophobia and hostility to people from different ethnic and racial backgrounds, specifically those of Asian descent. During the COVID-19 pandemic, death anxiety has been a large contributor to declining mental wellbeing among those working in helping professions such as nursing and social work.

Death Acceptance And Death Anxiety
Researchers have also conducted surveys on how being able to accept one’s inevitable death could have a positive effect on one’s psychological well-being, or on one’s level of individual distress. A research study conducted in 1974 attempted to set up a new type of scale to measure people’s death acceptance, rather than their death anxiety. After administering a questionnaire with questions regarding the acceptance of death, the researchers found there was a low-negative correlation between acceptance of one’s own death and anxiety about death meaning that the more the participants accepted their own death, the less anxiety they felt. While those who accept the fact of their own death will still feel some anxiety about it, this acceptance could allow them to form a more positive perspective on it.
A more recent longitudinal study asked cancer patients at different stages to fill out different questionnaires in order to rate their levels of death acceptance, general anxiety, demoralization, etc. The same surveys administered to the same people one year later showed that higher levels of death acceptance could predict lower levels of death anxiety in the participants.

Quiescence Is The Most Paradoxical Form Of Terror
People who have suffered panic attacks and I’m one know that fear can be so intense that you feel like you’re going to die. Your pulse races, your heart pounds, you find it hard to breathe. You might even pass out. But can your fear become so intense that it actually kills you?
This past Friday, Danielle Goldberg, a 26-year-old Staten Island woman, was riding in her building’s elevator up to her sixth-floor apartment just before noon when her neighborhood suffered a blackout. For half an hour, she was trapped inside the small space, in the darkness, alone. In an effort to stifle a growing panic attack, she used her cell phone to call her mother, but it was no use. By the time rescue workers freed her half an hour later, she was unconscious. She died in the hospital a short time later. At first glance, the cause of her death seems clear: pure fright.
But the truth is a bit more complicated.
Yes, being trapped inside an elevator triggered a panic attack that sent Goldberg’s fight-or-flight response the sympathetic nervous system into full overdrive. Her heart beat so wildly that it was unable to handle the exertion, and she went into cardiac arrest.
The body, insensitive to pain, goes completely limp, often falling to the ground as awkwardly as rag doll, limbs splayed, neck thrown back. Eyes closed, it trembles, defecates, and lies still. It looks, in a word, dead.
What Can You Do To Calm Down If Youre Having A Panic Attack
Its difficult to halt a panic attack when youre in the throes of one. According to Viciere, the reason it feels so difficult is that the physical symptoms make you panic even more.
If other medical conditions have been ruled out and your doctor has confirmed that you are having panic attacks, Viciere advises that you try to persuade yourself that everything will be fine.
Your mind can play tricks on you, making you feel as if youre dying because of the physical symptoms, but telling yourself youll be fine can help you relax, she explains.
When youre having a panic attack, she recommends working on slowing down your breathing. Count backwards and take slow, deep breaths to do this.
Your breathing will be shallow and you may feel as though you are running out of air during the attack. As a result, Viciere recommends the following steps:
Begin by inhaling deeply. To make your in-breath last longer, count for around 6 seconds in your brain while you breathe in.
Its also crucial to breathe via your nose. Then exhale slowly for 7 to 8 seconds. Several times during the attack, repeat this approach. Relaxation techniques can be used in addition to breathing exercises. Its critical to devote as much energy as possible to relaxing your body.
When they are not having a panic attack, some people find success by practicing yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises on a daily basis. This allows them to swiftly access these strategies during an attack.
