I Dont Think My Anxiety Has Improved
Unfortunately, my anxiety didnt noticeably improve during this one-week challenge.
Everyone with anxiety finds solutions that work for them. For me, coffee isnt it. I also didnt feel any significant improvements to my sleep. I still tossed and turned like I always do.
Im self-employed as a writer and often find my most productive time is from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., when Im full of caffeine and can plow through my work.
And the more work I get done, the less anxious I often feel. Without coffee, my morning productivity slowed. I didnt write as quickly. My deadlines inched closer with less work than usual to show for my hours at the computer.
Its almost as though coffee lessens my anxiety, as it gives me the energy I need to meet all of my deadlines.
What About Sugar In Coffee
So you dont take your coffee black and need a little sweetness in your life? Sugar and other artificial sweeteners are similar to caffeine in that it cant cause anxiety, but can worsen anxiety symptoms. It is best to stay away since they can cause effects such as fatigue , blurry vision, and upset stomach. These side effects can lower your mood which just contributes to anxiety.

How To Kick The Coffee
A common practice is to replace coffee with an alternative, like green tea or if the taste of coffee is too good to give up, a decaffeinated substitute. Caffeine is a stimulant that acts as a stimulant to our central nervous system. Not only caffeine helps in energizing us but also causes alertness. Too much caffeine can be bad for you if youre struggling with anxiety or related disorders.
Consuming caffeine causes jitteriness and similar symptoms of an oncoming anxiety attack. Why? Because caffeine stimulates our fight-or-flight response. Anxiety is our bodys natural response to stressful or threatening situations.
Caffeine can trigger this response, making us overreact in normal, non-threatening situations. Too much caffeine can also make you feel irritable and distressed in day-to-day situations.

There is a strong link between alcohol and anxiety. Research shows that people with anxiety disorders are two to three times more likely to have problems with drugs and alcohol at some point in their lives than the general population. It depends on how much caffeine you usually have in a day. If youre drinking more than 2-3 cups of coffee per day, then you should cut down to that level regardless. Youll likely only see problems such as chronic stress of anxiety if you exceed the typical amount of caffeine that you have in a day.
Of course, your health should come first. If you notice that youre unable to sleep well, or see any other effects that might require treatment, then you should lay off the caffeine. An acceptable amount of caffeine that should not have any negative effects on health is about 1-2 cups per day.
Dont drink caffeine at least 8 hours before bed if you want to optimize your sleep quality. The American Psychiatric Association says that coffee is a mood-altering drug and should be treated as such.

If you have anxiety, caffeine gets you coming and going.
Not only does it make you feel anxious when you drink it, it also makes you anxious when you quit drinking it!
Caffeine withdrawal is a recognized mental disorder.
Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety as well as brain fog, depression, irritability, fatigue, insomnia, muscle aches, and nausea.
This may make you reluctant to try quitting, but its still worth it since the worst of caffeine withdrawal usually lasts only a few days.

I Havent Taken My Gerd Medication In Days But I Dont Even Need It
Ive been on a daily GERD medication, omeprazole , since last July when my acid reflux could no longer be controlled by the occasional Tums. I typically take omeprazole in two-week treatment doses, meaning two weeks with medication, then one week without.
When visiting my grandma, I packed my GERD medication, as I was in the middle of a two-week dose. Several days after I got home, I realized I hadnt taken the medicine on my trip or unpacked it yet, meaning I hadnt taken it in nearly a week.
Although I had a bit of reflux over the week, it was nowhere near as severe as it usually is without medication, which is likely why I forgot to take it.
I eat a fairly healthy diet low in foods that exacerbate GERD, like garlic, alcohol, and fried foods.
Coffee is one of the only GERD triggers thats part of my diet, and Ive always wondered if it was the culprit.
How Many Cups Of Coffee Are Too Many

It depends. Caffeine affects all of us differently for various reasons, including bodyweight, gender, tolerance, and so on. But in general, around two cups of coffee wont cause a great deal of symptoms for the average person, according to Rashmi Goyal, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at The University of Toledo Medical Center.
Over 400 milligrams of caffeine may bring out symptoms of anxiety, Dr. Goyal says. Drinking more than 1,200 milligrams can even cause seizures in some individuals.

If Copious Coffee Intake Is One Bad Habit Of Mine I Can Live With That
Maybe its because my experiment was only for one week, but I never reached a place of comfort without coffee.
I still felt foggy most mornings, and unable to fully focus on my work. The headaches went away after just a few days, but my yearning for coffee did not.
I counted down the days until my challenge was over and I could once again enjoy several heavenly cups of coffee each morning.
I woke up on the first day after my challenge and excitedly brewed a pot of coffee, only to find myself stopping after one cup. My GERD had returned.
Although life without coffee didnt improve my anxiety or IBS, it did improve my GERD.
Ive been weighing whether the benefits I reap from coffee outweigh the need to take a daily medication for acid reflux.
The only way to know will be giving up coffee for longer than one week, and Im not sure if Im ready to do that quite yet.
